Why were saints so important?
The role of saints within the Catholic faith is explained. They were 'middle people', between ordinary people and God. Saints were also the reason people went on pilgrimage. Pilgrimage was a much valued opportunity to travel, have a religious experience and visit a few taverns. When Henry VIII started to take all this away, he was interfering not only with the Catholic belief system but with centuries of a much-loved tradition.
