An introduction to wind

What is wind, how can you measure it, and why does it vary in strength around the world? Wind is invisible; we cannot see it, but we can feel it and see how it affects things. When the sun shines, the air near the ground gets warmer. Warm air rises and cooler air moves under it, with these air movements creating the winds which blow across the landscape. The faster the air moves, the stronger the wind blows.

Some of the windiest places in Britain are the Orkney and Shetland Islands. There have been force 12 winds in Britain that have caused a lot of damage, but some of the most dangerous winds are tornadoes and hurricanes.
