James Stroud
Project Designer featured in Building Dream Homes
My passions are to create spaces that truly work, to get to know the client, their brief and aspirations as well as to deliver rational, contextual, timeless and beautiful schemes from inside out.
I was brought up in a small coastal town in Wales before taking a gap year and going on to study at Oxford Brookes University. I joined Loyn & Co Architects in 2008 after graduating with first-class honours in Interior Architecture from Oxford Brookes University.
I have worked on some of the practice's most prestigious and demanding projects including the recent award winning Stormy Castle, for which I was the Project Designer.
I have experience of a variety of commercial and residential schemes, including a caf茅 and ice cream parlour on the promenade of my hometown of Porthcawl and a highly sustainable, concrete, single level live-work house for two artists in the Forest of Dean.
I have exhibited work in the UK and abroad and have contributed to curating and building exhibitions. I am a guest critic at University of Westminster, London and until recently a member of the RSAW Design Circle. During my studies I enjoyed crafting a particular element or detail of proposed schemes to convey the qualities of the overall project, taking the design approach from the macro down to the micro. This approach is something I continue in my studio work, obsessing over every detail of the project.
In my spare time I'm a keen photographer, working both digitally and with film. In addition, I enjoy sketching in charcoal, pen and ink.
