Band Diary

Living the life of a rock star isn't as glamorous as it's cracked up to be. We wanted a band to tell it how it really is by blogging their lives and approached Fleeingnewyork.

Not only are they old friends of Huw's OneMusic show but they are about to embark on a big adventure, releasing their first e.p. on a tiny label in the U.S. and going over to L.A. to promote it.

Meet the band...

09/05/06 - The band wagon...

Matt - drummer and mr.myspace

So the band wagon keeps a movin......camp Fleeingnewyork is a happy place right now!

Saw Russell yesterday for a few social beers (dude you owe me) but the social side was short lived as the conversation quickly turned from 'mmm nice weather'...into....'f**k, how excited are you about this year!!??) Really seems like something is in the air. Emma has dissappeared into the sprawling metropolis of the Southampton streets but she's good for it.....what a girl).

So now we move on, the love from myspace is getting out of keyboard hand, the next move on Fleeingnewyork's chess board is being carefully planned... I think a strong spell of gigs around the country is in order as it feels like its been too long, I think we'll self combust otherwise!

The next American trip is being carefully planned for the Fall by our faithful American counterparts... the response from L.A has been overwelming, I don't think any of us realised what we had done until we got back. Going back there is gonna be something quite specialI feel.

Between then and now there has been talk of flying the other way to countries that I still don't believe exist... but as any other band will tell you, you don't bet your last buck on anything in this industry!!

Possible summer releases of new tracks and all that jazz but I'd hate to promise the world and not deliver... so watch this space! This is such a DIY band... and I love it.

Keep all your lovely comments coming and look out for new pictures going up all the time... the best is yet too come!

Lots of love

Matt and el band (you like that Russ?!)

02/05/06 - The hangover...

Russell - fuzzed up jazzmaster

So... we're back... like a troop of hungover vultures.

Emma is sporting a new pair of snakeskin boots(don't mess)... Matt looks like a kid who just had his toy taken away (that toy being L.A.)... and I just feel jetlagged and alien.

That was just the most legendry trip we ever took... my brain hurts from all the in-jokes and my liver hurts from the party hard living.

As soon as the plane landed... we drove straight from Heathrow to our local pub the Goblets ('Southampton's coolest bar' NME haha! - also the place we named the band, and taught Matt how to drink)... and had a mini welcome home bash with our mates.....!!!

I went off over town and found myself beatboxing in some crazy lute rock band....ahhh i think I'm home.

Next thing we know we're hanging in Brixtown (Telegraph) for our 1st show back... got to meet Ace from Skunk Anansie... haha...(old school)....which was fun and did a rocking show at about 1.30 am got to bed at 5am......not feeling too hot... we've all been acting weird since we got back.

Matt now refuses to 'jaywalk' and is always waiting for the green man... I said 'keep the change'to the lady in Pret... (idiot)... and Emma.....well she's got even cooler than she was before.....(I keep telling her this to her annoyance)... haha!

So america lingers on.... our plan is to return in September for a bit longer and to do more/bigger shows... can't f***ing wait!!!!!!!!!!!!

Till then it's ripping-up-England time so watch this space for our show in a room near you.

I still haven't unpacked yet, aaaarrrgggggg... got to sort my life out. Oh yeah, there's been loads of bands on this weekend for eat Southampton so we were out on sunday watching Thomas Tantrum.... and on monday we did a show in the centre of our hometown (next to my bus stop) which was a right laugh... there was a knight in shining armour on a white horse/bike and a massive dog called Boris in the crowd... bit of a league of gentlemen moment...

Ahhh how to come crashing down from a hollywood dream with a bang!

Next its to london to meet back up with Mira Manga our super dooper fixer person and then who knows!?!?!??!?!

Till the next time , this has been Rusticlepopsicle (I know Tony) xxxx

Bye.

The management

27/04/06 - The adult view...

Mark - the management

Mark from the management here to give the ‘responsible adult’ view of the last few weeks!

Obviously the highlight has been the LA trip.

Its always difficult making something happen for an unsigned band in a new territory, especially rock savvy LA, so we had to work it hard before and during the trip to make sure everybody knew we were there!

So mailing US industry types, and with very little press, our main weapon of mass introduction was the power of MySpace. Searching for anyone over the legal gigging age of 21 in LA we managed to build a base of over 4500 friends, but more importantly we got them involved through bulletins and messages... and they came... a few at Star Shoes (FNY were on fire so the word spread), more at Spaceland (including new friends who had heard the word, A&R from Columbia and Capitol Records, a well known LA correspondent, US booking agents and some very cool tastemakers).

So by the time we hit Lava Lounge the gig was packed and we had a our very own US branch of the FNY dancing boys and girls club! So Sweet Records had also been working hard behind the scenes to make sure that when FNY weren’t playing the buzz was still there - radio airplay at Indie 103.8 and a 60min live set at KXLU all added to the vibe.

Just as important the band were schmoozing their Virgin neon flight socks off with visits to all the cool, must be seen places, meaning no nights off for the band as HiFi from So Sweet Records introduced us to the delights of the Viper Room, Cinespace, Burgundy Room and their clientele.

So we flew back on Sunday with 3 very content and satisfied band members with job well done, a city of new friends and an invite back for September. Like all these things its keeping the ball rolling afterwards that counts.

Just to prove we hadn’t been forgotten and the LA trip was having an effect over here, 2 phone calls as we cleared customs; firstly from our UK distributor, Hot Records, to tell us that they were running out of stock.

Secondly a very exciting call to check our availability for July involving another long flight and a new audience... so watch this space and don’t forget to add your comments or any questions.

Emma from Fleeingnewyork

23/04/06 - Final thoughts...

Emma - quite tall bassist/vocalist/painter

Our time is nearly coming to the end here in L.A. We spent Friday wandering the streets lazily shopping in vintage boutiqes in Melrose, and supping fine American milkshakes in Jonny Rockets, the best diner in the world. Then off to Lava Lounge for our final gig of the week.

We have got used to turning up to the venue, not having a sound check and never knowing what order anyone is going to play or how long for. It all kind of falls into place somehow. We played well and it was loud and sweaty and all the walls were deep dark red.

We sold loads of CDs and the crowd were really receptive. Straight after the gig we all dashed to the car and began a long drive to downtown L.A. to check out a warehouse party but got lost and were driving round the wrong part of town for far too long.

Russell ended up taking the most dangerous piss of his life behind a gas station in South Central at four in the morning and Hi-Fi managed to drive off with the petrol pump still attatched to the car and ripped it from the mains while we urged Gary to stop smoking on the forecourt.

We unbelievably escaped death. By the end of five hours in downtown the car had become a hotbox and we just about made it back on the freeway and back to the hotel.

Saturday was a day off, so I went on a long walk and explored. You really need to drive to fully appreciate L.A. It takes so long to get places on foot because everything is so spread out and double the size. We all met up in the evening and went back to Lava Lounge to say goodbyes to the friendly bar staff and soundman, who helped us out.

Then back in the car for another mission downtown but this time we arrived stress free firstly to the Mountain Bar, another dark and broody bar with lots of cool types, then along to the Little Radio warehouse where I snuck in under the wing of the wonderful Alexander, our man in the know who slipped our record in his set when DJing the other night, and I met the Brian Jonestown Massacre and saw them play which was a pretty amazing way to finish off the week.

They were on form and played for over two hours. It was great to finally catch them live. Good to see familiar faces from our gig at Spaceland who are tied up in that scene. While all this was going on, the rest of the party was at the Viper Room and the Rainbow Bar famous for Lemmy's presence. I do believe there were naked girls involved but don't quote me on it.

I left happy. The guys got burritos and we went back and slept like babies.

So comment us and tell us what you think of the photos, or anything in fact.

Emma signing off.

21/04/06 - L.A Adventure

Russell - fuzzed up jazzmaster

The last two days have been a blur of sunshine, nightclubs, and cruising around looking for trouble.

Drove out to Silverlake for our gig at the legendary Spaceland. The place is done out in silver and blue and has a back bar with big domes on the roof that throw your conversation across the room - danger!

Met some peeps that heard us on the radio and were already big big fans! Weird!

Hung with the scenesters - thanks, to Jolie Lash, Joey from S.I.R. and John diMAMBRO (red lightning), Alexander Lewenski, Greg Hetson from Bad Religion, mostly to Laura for my bottle of Corona).

Later I went up into the hill's to a random tiki beach bar and while I was there I got to meet Meg White from that band White Stripes! She was really cool and taller than I ever knew. Got dropped home in a mustang!

So the next day (now with name dropping rife) we went off to do photo call at the Hollywood Bowl! So freaking - like being in the song! We got mistaken for Green Day by the passing traffic!?

Next we had our live session for KXLU to do. At dinner we saw Rachel Hunter... mmmmmmmmmm!

Had a spell of freakin' out when we lost half of Emma's amp and my guitar slide but we make do and went out live live live, sounded coooool as f**k!

Took the seedy scenic route home taking in Rodeo Drive and the ladyboys of Santa Monica Blvd!

The managers took the freeway and were neary incarcerated for speeding hahahahah!

Also found our songs we being spun in a club downtown AMAZA-ZING!

"see you round the clubs"

Matt from Fleeingnewyork

19/04/06 - Round one...

Matt - drummer and mr. myspace

We have now officially played our first L.A show. Fancy!

Twas fairly stressful at first as we didn't get a soundcheck but nevertheless the gig rocked and we made some new friends in the process. I think everyone feels much more relaxed now we have the Star Shoes gig under our belts and we are gagging to play again... roll on the next show!

Inbetween the non-soundcheck and gig, we found ourselves at the Viper Room meeting up with a radio DJ Mark Sovel from 103.1 fm - a lovely bloke who does a great job spreading the indie rock n roll love around the L.A. A brief encounter as we had to shoot back to the gig but a worthy one all the same.

The gig... the stage shook, the p.a almost crashed to the floor (seriously) stomping feet and rowdy behaviour, I think the term English gentleman got lost that night.

We played with two L.A based bands, one called Just and the other the Drugstore Cowgirls... excellent. We've got say thanks for being so kind to us, lending equipment, duck taping cymbal stands and rocking hard.

Next on the agenda is a venue called Spaceland. Whenever you mention this to a L.A musician you get the response 'sweet' so I'm thinking its gonna be like totally awesome totally dude!

Ok, I have too go practice my English accent so will love ya and leave ya…..will let you know how we get on at tonight's show.

Emma from Fleeingnewyork

18/04/06 - And so it begins

Emma - quite tall bassist/vocalist/painter

Fleeingnewyork are now officially in America.

We survived the long long flight of 11 hours with the help of films, books, red lipped trolly dollies, free booze (bloody marys really do hit that spot at altitude) and quite a fine array of sights... Greenland with its huge expanses of white ice, the Nevada desert and Las Vegas... yeah baby.

We all slipped through customs surprisingly easily and were met at the airport by Mira and Paul from So Sweet, the label we have just released an e.p. with here in L.A.

They whisked us off in a big jeep, drove the large highways and saw the city finally. And what a city it is. Palm trees, old buicks, too many Mcdonalds, signs and buildings in pastel shades straight from 1930s and 1950s faded glamour. And it's sunny as hell.

Piled into our room (five is a little cozy) and met up with the classy and talented, lover of scuzzy thrusting rock n roll, miss Sarah Bedford who is our official photographer documenting our movements around this place.

So far, our management nearly got thrown out of the hotel, we have climbed the Hollywood hill to the very top, above the letters and risked death for photo opportunity.

Then saw the whole of L.A. light up like a grid of fire, drank right on through the time difference and came up smiling, met a couple of strange characters in bars, got used to tipping every one, Matt met Michael Jackson, risky night swimming in hotel pool, eating sushi and pancakes and realising how f* huge all the portions are out here, dancing on the stars of Hollywod Blvd, and we still haven't played our first gig!

We hired our equipment today, I've got a fine Fender P bass. Exceptional! We are borrowing as much as possible which is a good thing cause I don't trust Mark driving on those huge roads in big ass American car!

The gig tonight is in a place called Star Shoes where you can purchase trendy retro classics with sweet heels while checking out some music and you can smoke in the bar which is a rarity and a pleasure cause they have been kicking our asses for lighting up pretty much anywhere!

Well that is all for now but keep checking up on us cause there are many more entries to come and photos hopefully if we have the technology, see you later, we gonna go work on our tans now!!

Russell from Fleeingnewyork

09/04/06 - Scheming away...

Russell - fuzzed up jazzmaster

Uh so here we are... a new record was made as we came into 06, and we spent the early year scheming away in our bunker for new ideas to make our band more and more challenged and happening.

So we wrote some more darker and f***ed up songs........then we put out a record in the States on So Sweet records (a kind of best-of-so-far e.p.)... then we had a artwork makeover... all by Emma of the band who really is a painter in her past life...

And then we got bored and made a clubnight called ClubFleeingnewyork... and here we are on the edge of getting the plane to the U. S. of A... but right now we are sporting hangovers......

It's the morning after the night before.............

ClubFleeingnewyork!!! has had it's first night and fun was had by all........

A great set by Edward J. Hicks......with off-mic yelps and hollerin, and his hillbilly hiphop stylin......the wonderful Thomas Tantrum, with a peach of a set timpani drum sticks and 70s sunglasses... and then Mach Shau, the finest punks in town... el band (Fleeingnewyork) topped of the night with a cherry of riffage..... and our friends and us had a ball, spinnin the tunes till we all fell down.

We've been workin on our new tracks and it was a joy to share them last night.... Cheepgirls,1'2'3'4'5'six,and the mighty In The Shallows... yes yes yes!!!

And now we have to get our shit together for L.A.

Matt from Fleeingnewyork

07/04/06 - L.A. here we come...

Matt - drummer and mr. myspace

Right, going to Los Angeles... Its less than a week before we hit the sky, and spirits are high!

In true Fleeingnewyork 'DIY' style we've been pulling resources out of our arse to get out to the States. A series of gigs were booked, ClubFleeingnewyork was born in which we put a rockin night on, full of our favourite bands and cocktails to help fund the trip.........

Managed to book a single room in some random motel in Hollywood and we're all sharing it... great... 3 band members... 2 managers. I'll take the drawer in the bedside cabinet.

We have been talking to the bands that we have the gigs with... and they can lend us some stuff ... so can one of the dudes at the label, So Sweet Records... the rest is gonna be pure luck... playin gigs with other peoples stuff is like running a race in someone else's shoes... but I guess it's all gonna be worth it in the end.

We've been making plenty of friends out there already with a little help from Mr.Myspace, think a buzz is forming!!

I love rock and roll... so there you have it... thats how a rock band scrabbles all it's stuff together and starts doing one of the crazy ideas it had down the pub...

Now we have this week to make sure our songs are sounding like never before, find our passports, gear up for customs keeping in mind we look like dandy pirates from the planet England!!... get our fix of Englishness (Earl Grey/Eastenders) and we're off... Hugh Grant voices perfected.....

God help us!

F*** yeah, Los Angeles here we come!
