Large green egg is from one of the Shetland hens... The smaller green egg ... I managed to breed a Shetland batam hen but she has no mate so she is a one off !

The light is horrible today so the pic isnt really showing the full colour. Large egg is an olive tinged green Batam egg is the prettiest pastel green

Thanks mucho, Fair Isle. Amazing. # As to the Shetland bantam: too bad. I assume to try mounting a breeding rescue effort would be too onerous. # Any sign of "speckled-ness" from time to time on the eggs? I must admit to a fondness for speckled eggs.

Green with envy, that's what you are FC. # I like my hens to lay double egg yolks: how are the Shetland hens in this regard Fair Isle?

Mjc Shetlands do lay the odd double yolker, but only the odd one. Because they are not a hybrid they are not so prone to system hicups as the hybrids are so releasing 2 yolks at once does not really happen to them. True breeds are that bit more refined & finely tuned i guess. Ive a few that lay light brown eggs speckled with dark chocolate brown. I've still got the bantams parent stock, so will try again this year to gain some more bantam shetland hens, If I can even get 1 more hen & a rooster, I have enough to slowly slowly work a line up & stabilize it.

Thanks for bringing back silence on your blog site, Angela. Personally, I prefer my hens to do their job (put on weight and/or lay eggs) silently. No need to waste energy from good feed cackling away!! As to roosters, with an exception or two, they are better caponized (surely, there is no law against non commercial snippings?), or roasted on a spit.

I once kept geese. They lay the most enormous eggs that used to make people sick. They just kept on laying and layiing at a phenomenal rate and nobody would have them given. But they were great characters, had to give them away when I moved house.

I don't know how people on the islands get rid of their extra zucchinis (in the States, we leave them on the neighbor's doorsteps at night, anonymously) but one way to get rid of unwanted goose eggs is to boil them and feed them to Fido.

Just been to see a lovely man in a village call Asselby he sells Shetland bantam eggs on ebay he has 3 unrelated trios so would be a great boost to your blood lines. He all for conserving the breed and I am sure he would do all he can to help your quest.
