South African President Jacob Zuma has warned that his country will face dire consequences if it doesn't take steps to close the widening gap between the rich and the poor.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) admits that the black majority who were left out by the unfair apartheid system are still trapped in poverty.

Mr Zuma's statement comes amid increasing pressure on his government to address workers demands for better salaries.

Network Africa's Mpho Lakaje has the story from Johannesburg.
