What is coding?
Description
A basic explanation of what coding is. In order to play games, do homework or talk to friends on a computer, programs are used. Computer programs are made using a special language called code. Coding is used so that the computer understands what to do. A cartoon mouse is seen programming another mouse on the screen to move forwards and backwards, using words and numbers. Once the mouse knows how to write basic code she feels that she is able to program the computer to do lots of different things.
Classroom Ideas
The children could use basic commands to direct another child to somewhere in the classroom. Then they could use basic programming software available on the internet to move an object around the screen. Ask children to use coding to move it forwards and backwards and turn left and right. Can they make a square or rectangle? They could be asked to write some instructions for a programmable robot to move to a certain place, and ask a partner to check that their instructions work
