What is an algorithm?
Description
Algorithms are described as something very simple but important. They are explained as instructions that are split into little steps so that a computer can solve a problem or get something done. How to brush your teeth is demonstrated by a cartoon mouse and robot. The process is broken down into simple steps such as: 鈥榯ake the lid off the toothpaste鈥 and 鈥榦pen your mouth鈥.
Classroom Ideas
After watching the clip, teachers could ask the children to share ideas of other sets of instructions, such as taking a photo, having a bath, making a cup of tea or laying the table. The children could draw, write or type step-by-step instructions and, if possible, someone could try to follow them. This could link with literacy work on instructional writing. Remember to use the word algorithm to reinforce its meaning.
