Next Week's Themes

Bryan Burnett | 16:36 UK time, Friday, 26 September 2008

Monday:
The news has been full of it, Abba sang about plenty of it, while for Simply Red it was just too tight to mention. Yes, it's the Credit Crunch! So let's try and cheer up the markets and get the city moving with a host of monetary suggestions for tonight.

Tuesday:
Estelle on the A9 came up with tonight's suggestion - clothing and wardrobes. Everything to do with clothes from wearing them to washing them. Could this be the night Vic has to play Lady in Red or can you come up with some tunes to save his blushes!

Wednesday:
It's the Return of the Running Man! Bryan's back - after a rather exhausting break marathon training in the States - so we're going to celebrate his endeavours with your songs about exercise - Olivia Newton-John got Physical, while Jackson Browne was Running on Empty, and of course Bruce Springsteen was born to do it.

Thursday:
After the politeness of our Forms of Address theme last week, we're returning to a double theme tonight with Compliments and Insults - so while on the one hand You're Beautiful you may also want to tell someone you Married a Monster from Outer Space - thanks to Joe the Jam Man for tonight's theme.

  • Comment number 6.

    Adam,
I know lots of people assume that Jethro Tull is the guy who plays the flute. Was that the reason given for the regret?

  • Comment number 7.

DanielleFromCanada, great shout with Tom Waites I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You.Juliet Turner's version is beautifull too.

  • Comment number 29.

One song and a choice of artist.

Monday's show. How about Credit in the Straight World by either Hole or the best band to come out Wales, the Young Marble Giants.

On a controversial note, am I the only one who thinks Live Through This by Hole was a better album than Nevermind?

  • Comment number 30.

    Yes

  • Comment number 31.

joethejamman: Thanks for passing along the suggestion. I do like her version; the duet aspect lends a nice quality to the song. Being a new GiOer myself, I'm not familiar with past theme suggestions - is there an archive list anywhere? I assume duets has probably been done in the past, but if not, it might be a good one.

  • Comment number 32.

Ah glen, I see you're 'in the mood' for a bit of tradition.

Live Through This is far superior record to Nevermind.

    Have you heard it?

  • Comment number 33.

I was trying to provoke a debate but your suggestion has not provoked a huge backlash from Nirvana fans.

On a personal note - Lord Lucan is missing but Glenn Miller's plane is overdue.

  • Comment number 34.

    More like Chattanooga Choo-Choo

  • Comment number 35.

    Monday

May I second Working For The Yankee Dollar - The Skids, great track great band 'nuff said.

    Clash - Know Your rights

Gary US Bonds - Out of Work as produced and written by the Boss

The River, or Downbound Train- Bruce Springsteen

  • Comment number 36.

    CLOTHES:

Dave Edmunds - "Worn Out Suits, Brand New Pockets" - would suit Mondays's theme too.

The Auteurs - "Junk Shop Clothes"

The Kinks - "Dedicated Follower of Fashion"

Ian Dury and the Blockheads - "Sweet Gene Vincent"

  • Comment number 37.

It would be good to hear a Psychedelic Furs song on the radio that wasn't 'Pretty in Pink' (whatever happened to Molly Ringwald?) so I'll go for 'All That Money Wants' for Monday's show.

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

  • Comment number 38.

    Tuesday

Donald where's yer troosers - Andy Stewart
Handbags and Gladrags - Rod Stewart
    Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
If it wisnae fur yir wellies - Billy Connolly

  • Comment number 39.

    "Money" Pink Floyd
"I Got Nothin'" Iggy Pop and James Williamson
"Frankie Teardrop" Suicide (illustrates the dangers of the credit crunch)

    "Dole Queue Blues" Zachariah Toadstool

  • Comment number 40.

    Tuesday
    Gloria - Laura BRAnnigan

I go away for the weekend and I get back to a blog full of long lists! EC, I thought I left you in charge?

Scottish Git- Anderson said he felt it just wasn't very rock n roll to be named after an eigtheenth century agricultural engineer.

  • Comment number 43.

    Suggestions for Monday:

I Want Money(That's what I want)- Flying Lizards

Obsessed - 999 cos money seems to be a national obsession these days and the singers name is Nick Cash!

Working for the Yankee Dollar - Skids

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - AC/DC

Slave To The Wage - Placebo

There Goes A Tenner - Kate Bush

    Bank Robber - The Clash

That's my lot. Hi to all GIOers
    Ali and the Winters
    Bonnybridge

  • Comment number 44.

For Tuesday's sartorial songs,it has to be Kinks" Dedicated Follower of Fashion" to open or close the show!Also--
    Mary Chapin Carpenter"This Shirt"
    Rod Stewart "Handbags and Gladrags"
I'd even go for Dylan's Boots of Spanish Leather -- but please no Leonard Cohen "Famous Blue Raincoat"--if you lived out here in the colonies, you'd understand...it gets played to death.

  • Comment number 45.

How about the clash "Daddy was a bank robber" just like all the city gents in the Financial circles,

  • Comment number 46.

A couple of tracks which have been suggested already but to mix up the versions a bit

Handbags and Gladrags - Chris Farlowe, personal opinion but I think this is the definitive version of this track.

Famous Blue Raincoat - Jeniffer Warnes

    a couple more

The Who - Dont Let Go The Coat

Clash - All The Young Punks (New Boots and Contracts)

Maria McKee - If Love is a red dress (hang me in rags)

  • Comment number 47.

Thanks for all the mentions Vic, yip I am an addicted blogger now and indeed a happy man. Yes Garvockhill is indeed male, works in the Laurencekirk area in the shadow of the Garvock Hill.

    Late suggestion for Tuesday Cheese

    Haircut 100 - Favourite Shirt

  • Comment number 48.

Adam, Thank you for the info.
Norrie, Re: Handbags and Gladrags. Like yourself, personal opinion. I can't see by Mary Coughlan. (She's a big lassie).

    Tuesday

'Gold-Tipped Boots, Black Jacket and Tie' - Jethro Tull

  • Comment number 49.

Don't own a pair myself, but I'd like to nominate for Tuesday's show 'Silver Shorts' by The Wedding Present.

In 1992 the band released a single every month and this one I if remember right was the April release.

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

  • Comment number 50.

    Sultans of Ping FC "Where's Me Jumper?" (notone I'm particularly fond of, as they were a pale imitation of HMHB, but I haven't heard it in ages);
    Velvet Underground "Venus in Furs"
    Shooglenifty "Venus in Tweed"
Half Man Half Biscuit "Venus in Flares" or "All I Want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit"
Suppose you could fling in "Venus in Blue Jeans" for good measure

  • Comment number 51.

Might as well get this out of the way early...

    Wed:

    The Boy Racer - Morrissey

On The Streets I Ran - Morrissey

  • Comment number 52.

    Wednesday

    John Cooper Clarke "Health Fanatic"
Half Man Half Biscuit "Restless Legs"
Amon Duul with Robert Calvert "Adrenalin Rush"

  • Comment number 53.

    Wednesday

    Running Back - Thin Lizzy.

Its from the Jailbreak album and I dont think I've ever heard it on the radio, which
is curious when, according to Wiki's entry on the album:
"The singles include Jailbreak and The Boys Are Back in Town, the latter being Thin Lizzy's biggest hit. The band originally wanted to release the more pop-oriented Running Back as the first single, which may account for the song's accessible arrangement and production."

  • Comment number 54.

What the show needs on an evening dedicated to attire is some Flares and Slippers by The Cockney Rejects.

Get set for some heads down no nonsense mindless boogie from 1979.

Should blow the mothballs out the wardrobe.

  • Comment number 55.

A full get it on workout:

Racing In The Street - Bruce Springsteen

Running For Our Lives - Marianne Faithful

Walk A Mile In My Shoes - Elvis Presley

    Jump - Aztec Camera

Lift Me Up - Bruce Springsteen

    The Weight - The Band

    Swimming Horses - Siouxsie

  • Comment number 56.

    Wednesday

    Run for home - Lindisfarne
    Run Run Away - Slade
Take it on the run - REO Speedwagon

Definitely not the Spenser Davis Group. Nothing worse when you're running having that pumping in your ear, it's demotivational.

Hope you've got listen again working because I'll miss Wednesday nighst show. Clashes with a very important running date in sunny Anster.

  • Comment number 57.

    Thursday - compliments/insults

How about a good Dundee band, The View, with an excellent insult "Face For The Radio".

Bryan, please note that this is not at all relevant to Get It On.

  • Comment number 58.

A last-minute suggestion for Tuesday's theme -I don't know if it exists on anything other than vinyl:
St. Cecilia."Leap Up and Down and Wave Your Knickers in the Air"...I dare you to find it--one of the top 40 worst songs of all time, apparently-let's find out!

  • Comment number 59.

Was St Cecilia not Jonathan King in one of his unfunny alter-egos? If so, is he not in the Paul Gadd banned category? Only more so, as GG at leas had a bit of musical value...

  • Comment number 60.

You could have an evening of artistes with criminal convictions.

It wouldn't rule out many people.

  • Comment number 61.

Made a mess of posting my first message on the blog this afternoon so Sharp Dressed Man has already been played.

    Other suggestions for tonight:

    Depeche Mode "Blue Dress"
    Michael Jackson "Billy Jean"
Kings of Leon "Taper Jean Girl"
    Cardigans "My Favourite Game"

    Debs from Giffnock

  • Comment number 62.

    Advice please ....

Would a track like Thankyou (falettinmebemicelfagain) by Sly/Magazine/Van Morrison i.e any version of a great track count in Thursdays theme?

My insults are usually fairly direct so i am struggling with that one!

  • Comment number 63.

    ps Hi Debs

  • Comment number 66.

An "x"??? Thats a first on the blog. I know Glen Miller is often blowing his own trombone, but still, thats one helluva sook fae Maclean.

  • Comment number 69.

    It's Wednesday already?

Right, time to hit the 'pause' button on the OCD

  • Comment number 70.

    Welcome back Bryan

I'd back a couple of suggestions already made:
Jump - Aztec Camera (Norrie McLean)
Long May You Run - Neil Young (Glen Miller)

Or how about Swimming Song by Eddi Reader?

    Andy

  • Comment number 73.

Welcome back Brian, hope you had a good holiday. No need to worry about your show as Vic did a grand job holding the fort.

Tonight I'll be walking up the hill(from work) but Kate Bush ran up one,Iron Maiden ran to them. Maybe we'll all meet at the top!!

    Gordon Christie,Kirrie

  • Comment number 74.

Come on Norrie put your toys back in the pram and rejoin the merry wit and banter which is BB's blog.

I'm sure Debs does have exceptional taste in music and that will be balanced by some of the exceptional "mince" which is quite often asked for with never a hope of being played.

In comparison with some posts on other blogs you're getting off quite lightly with just some gentle ribbing from GM and AFR.

Just for Julie and Maria (time for the GOM hat). HoppoLocos, which tunes would you like BB to play out of your very extensive list? If he was knackered after marathon training in the states, he'll need a lie down in a dark room to recover from reading that lot. I'm still trying to get through them all and I started at half six this morning!!!

  • Comment number 75.

    Norrie,
quote - 'If they are horrible to you just ignore them' - unquote

Don't forget to check out the Mary Coughlan cover, let me know what you think.

SAHB did a great version of Del Shannon's "Runaway" on "The Penthouse Tapes" with Alex Harvey wailing and greetin his way through the vocals.

  • Comment number 78.

After 6 days of the Galloway Growl its good to have you back BB.

    Thursday:
I'm surprised no one has asked for The Monks. Maybe it is because they cant decide if its an insult or a compliment. Anyway I'll go with:

Afternoon GIO bloggers. Much excitement as BB is back in the building and warming up for his return tonight.

Before the show kicks off, I just wanted to remind you all (and you know who you are!) that this is a forum for everybody, that's everybody, to contribute to.

The programme thrives on your input and Bryan and the team would hate to think that anybody, regular or newcomer, felt unable to post their messages, their way. And I'm getting the distinct impression that the over-riding tone on the Blog lately is putting people off. I think it would put me off, frankly!

By all means suggest one tune if that's the one you feel strongly about. But can I stress again that your lists ARE welcome. The top songs for any theme will always come up more than once and it's great to see unexpected tracks suggested that trigger friendly discussion and debate amongst us all. We love the dedication and creativity reflected in your requests and that's what we want to see on Bryan's Blog.

Right, that's me said my piece - enjoy the rest of the week with Bryan and Producer Barbara and keep blogging!

Good one Maria. And to think I missed them when they were away (sure I remember others mentioning them too). C'mon Bryan, ...restore order!

Good theme to come back and get it on with Bryan. Not actually about running, Neil Young's 'Long May You Run' would still be appropriate. 'King of the Road' - Proclaimers, 'Running Man' - Jimmy Nail or 'On the Road Again' - Willie Nelson would also be good. Having been soaked the last few times I've been out running, 'Here Comes the Rain Again' - Eurythmics' or 'Have you Ever Seen the Rain' - CCR might be more like it but I do like 'Born to Run' by Jason Ringenberg. 'Thorn in my Side' - Eurythmics would do for tonight or tomorrow.
    Glad to have you back.

Thank you Maria in Stirling, and uour reply has alerted me to the fact that I mispelt my moniker. In future I will have to restrain myself and try for a few quality tracks, but on this occasion I got carried away and nearly moved on to swimming, and there's always Dexy's Midnight Runners, and I'm getting carried away again. I may stop now and look at Thursday's theme instead.

    Thursday, 1st hour

'You're Such A Good Looking Woman' - Joe Dolan

Warning:- While this song is on air, dancing shoes MUST be worn!

    Thursday, 2nd hour

'You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly' - Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty

    Insult songs;

The best ever must be Idiot Wind by Bob Dylan and he also did Like a Rolling Stone and Positively 4th Street, and there is alwasy How do you Sleep by John Lennon. Re my earlier blog I recall hearing that Running Bear was / is Gavin Hastings' 'song' and he was known to get extremely miffed at rugby parties / drinking sesisons if anyone else sang it. I am also trying to work out how I can get Pressure Drop included, I am trying to start a campaign to have this adopted as the Scottish national anthem, just because it's such a great song by just about anyone Toots, Specials, Jack Johnson, Robert Plamer et al.

Sorry that should have been Robert Palmer!

Hehehe - Good to see Obergruppenfuerher ProducerMandi stepping in to sort out the petty arguments.

For tonights Exercise theme Max B Gold would like to suggest:

Fats Domino - Walkin to New Orleans.

At the risk of sounding critical of your maiden blog, this second list's a bit more manageable, Hoppo! (what was the mis-spelling??)

For tonight, I suppose Dwayne Chambers might suggest "Love is the Drug" by Roxy Music.

Hope your break was a goodun, Bryan, there's a pile o' blog tae get through this week!

Nice one Mandy. That'll stop any trouble at the Christmas party and we can all be friends again.

Welcome home from the Wild West Bryan.
For tonight would love to hear Creedence Clearwater Revival "Run Through The Jungle".... a rather more "swampy" run than your recent mountainous adventures.

Apologies to all if this posts twice as our Intertubes are misbehaving.

    hi and welcome back Bryan,

Nice to see Mandi keeping order on the blog, though I believe it's mostly good natured banter eh bloggers?

Today is my 40th birthday and I'm, unashamedly, hoping that will get one of my suggestions played!! So here goes,

    First, Last and Always or
Walk Away - Sisters of Mercy

    The Walk - The Cure

Walk On By - The Stranglers version

Keep On Running (til you burn) - Uk subs

    Midnight Rambler - Rolling Stones

    Ramble On - Led Zeppelin

and please say Hi and thanks to my lovely family.

Ali and the Winters(Tommy, Eve and Aedan)

Happy Birthday Ali! And of course you are 100% correct that any banter is good natured! I don't even think the Grumpy Old Men would really want to discourage anyone from blogging or making suggestions :)

Welcome back Bryan, we missed you!

Maria in Stirling hoping that Mandi is not going to stop the Xmas party cos she feels we have all been misbehaving....Barbara, help!

    JimFraeErskine,
Thank you for the words of support during my (doomed) attempt to get some Tull tunes on the show. They were much appreciated.

  • Comment number 95.

Thanks for the mention on the show Bryan, well pleased. First blog, a name check and a song played. It can only go downhill from here. As to the name Harryfaegatehoose it was going to be Hippo Locos as I currently have a thing about hippos and for my sins I currently wander down on Saturdays to watch Inverurie Locos in the Highland League. Used to go and see Aberdeen play, but that got too depressing. I am now thinking that Hoppolocos sounds a bit Greek and intellectual. The initial blog was done this morning as I arrived at work and was a bit bored- and it just kind of ran on after initially thinking I wouldn't be able to think of more then two or three songs.

  • Comment number 96.

Its got to be HoppoLocos, Hoppo. Great name.

  • Comment number 97.

Totally agree frodo feet vegas, think the Hopplocos should stay!

Can I suggest the Temptations "Treat Her Like A Lady" for Thursday? Think that fits for a compliment ;-)

    Maria in Stirling

  • Comment number 98.

    COMPLIMENTS:
"It's great when we're together" - Finlay Quaye

Kid Creole and The Coconuts' self-complimentary "I'm a Wonderful Thing Baby".

"You are so beautiful" - Joe Cocker

    INSULTS:
"Your Feet's Too Big" - Fats Waller

"May the bird of paradise fly up your nose" - Little Jimmy Dickens

    "Stupid Girl" - Garbage

    "Ugly" - Daphne and Celeste

"10 Commandments of Man" - Prince Buster (an insult to women but still quite funny)

    and...especially for BB:
"Great DJ" - The Ting Tings
"You Talk Too Much" - Joe Jones

  • Comment number 99.

I bet there is more than one blogger sitting glued to the screen, desperate to get your name on post 100. Go on then. Do it, then get to bed.

    (I give in).

  • Comment number 100.

I'm not desperate but, hey, might as well give it a try.
