My First Blog - by Vic Galloway! (Age......??? and a half!)

Bryan Burnett | 16:51 UK time, Thursday, 25 September 2008

Hello bloggers and blog-readers!

It's my first time doing this on the Radio Scotland site, and let me start by saying it's been an absolute pleasure standing in for Bryan this week. I've done the show before, but only when it was an hour long - the 2 hour format is a different story, and very satisfying to get through a ton more music! I hope you've enjoyed the music that I've played out, sifting through your ever-inspiring lists and suggestions. Yes, YOU choose the music! However, it's not over yet... I'm very much looking forward to the last stint of this week tonight with our 'Sleeping and Dreaming' theme to cap off the week. Of course, I'll be back for the beginning of next week on Monday and Tuesday, and we'll post the new themes asap for you to start cogitating on the matter! BB will return in a post-holiday haze of happiness and healthiness! I think I need a bit of that too...

What have I learnt this week... well, you lot are a tight community with a serious knowledge of music across all genres; I now know how to cook A-grade fairy cakes thanks to Jan in Rutherglen; Producer Barbara's pet name for her husband is 'Lambchop'; Radio Scotland Boss JZ likes to crash the studio and film us occasionally check his blog today! Pluto Shervington is a reggae musician (shame on me - I'm a massive reggae fan!), thanks to Julie from Edinburgh... and a whole lot more besides - thank you all!

You've been very welcoming to me this week, so maybe you'll listen in to the final 'Vic's Most Wanted' this Friday 26th September between 6.40-8pm, and tune in regularly to my Monday night 'new music and alternative classics' show between 8.05-10pm each week. It's always good to have new friends listening in.

Ok, I best get ready for tonight's show... Sweet Dreams!

    Uncle Vic,
You have only two days to right a terrible wrong. The complete absence of Jethro Tull's music on the show is a national disgrace. Ian Anderson is, after all, one of our own. And as if to rub salt in my wounds you force me to listen to The Smiths!
Have pity on a sad old git.
Stop playing hard to get (it on).

  • Comment number 2.

I concur with my esteemed colleague's remarks - The Mouse Police Never Sleeps would have been ideal for Thursday's theme - feel a bit daft now for not thinking of it at the time!

  • Comment number 3.

Im sorry but I am not a fan of Vic Galloway, sounds too Rock FM/Bruno Brooks for me. However he does have more dimension than Bryan B.
Also please ditch the producer from the show, she so Real Radio!!!!!

SGit, Please stop abasing oneself re Tull 鈥渢hat must be the humus鈥 your words not mine, try dialing Pennsylvania 6-500 for help...

Wow JJ don't mince yer words.

    madmac,
BB has a blind spot when it comes to Tull, whereas Vic is a reasonable chap. Hence the rant.
Regarding your second point, I could posit the argument that as the word 'houmus' is of Middle Eastern origin, (Arabic, since you ask) and is, in English, written phonetically 'humus' is merely a variant spelling.

    But that would be childish.

  • Comment number 6.

    Afternoon SGit,
I like your pejorative style but English, Gaelic, and several european languages have always seemed to serve my needs in life, not much call for Arabic in my neck of the woods.

R.U. a TEACHER, FAT MAN with LOCOMTIVE BREATH or merely LIVING IN THE PAST?

Think you should get to bed at a decent hour.

  • Comment number 7.

    LOL
    2 out of 4 ain't bad!
That No. in Pennsylvania is constantly engaged, btw.

  • Comment number 8.

I blame my ELDER brother for Tull being in my psyche...

    Nothing is easy.

    See ya.

  • Comment number 9.

If we're going to have Jethro Tull, we could have an evening of bands with lead singers called Ian.

I'll go for Ian Curtis of Joy Division.

    Sure there must be more.

  • Comment number 10.

    Ian Hunter
    Iain Matthews
    Ian Dury

It might be a longer show if you allowed John as a variant.

I friend of mine who met Ian Anderson described him as a charming man. Five minutes before he was due on stage he stuck his head under a tap and pulled his hair in all directions, grabbed his flute and was off.

I see he has now adopted the bandana, not I hope due to a hair product accident like the late Arthur Lee.

Can I request some respite from the Tull chat?!
Sorry, maybe EC and AFR have been training me well in being a grumpy old woman ;-)

  • Comment number 12.

Say it loud and there's music playing.

Say it soft and it's almost like praying.

Is there a link to the list of approved topics?

  • Comment number 13.

    GM
Don't forget that allegedly I am also a will of a whisp and a clown ;-)
Please see Julie and EC after class for approved topics!
    Maria

  • Comment number 14.

    Maria,
Worry not. After Tuesday, requesting Jethro Tull will be futile.

  • Comment number 15.

Maria, I'm confused. Was my post about rules misunderstood? People can discuss flower arranging on this blog for all I care(or have a right to criticise). I was merely trying to point out to all the funsuckers that they were being a tad bossy is all!!!

  • Comment number 16.

    Easy on the Spoonerisms

  • Comment number 17.

On the singers called Ian theme...

Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen.

That's one more but there's definentley others out there.

  • Comment number 18.

    Hi JFE
No, I was just referring to you and EC as you like to remind us what its really all about :-)

  • Comment number 19.

Oh I give up. I can't think when I've ever tried to say what this blog is all about (except in jest, paraphrasing Adam and EC). That sort of thing is best left to the experts... ECs back now so I'll haud ma wheesht.

  • Comment number 20.

JFE, you and I are the only voices of reasons agains the grumpy old Victor Meldrews around here so please don't give up yet!
    Maria :-)

  • Comment number 21.

Maria, Well, If you put it like that...I'll carry on with my very very long list of insults for Thursday.

  • Comment number 22.

    Steady girls.......

  • Comment number 23.

Ladies - if I wasn't laughing so hard at this cat fight I might take offence.

Leave AFR and me out of this one.

I think we picked up the GOM tag (wrongly I should add, cos we really do like a laugh, and we get one daily reading stuf like this)because we dared to suggest that people should only request a couple tunes they would really like played instead of some of the aimless google'd lists on show.

Now pardon me if I've missed the meaning of the show here but I thought that's what GIO was all about.

Keep a watching brief for the next wind up. Coming to a blog near you. (Long live Jeremy Beadle)

  • Comment number 24.

I'm afraid your good wishes for Jeremy have come too late.

  • Comment number 25.

    Dear EC

Have always agreed with you re long lists but just didn't want to give you the satisfaction of saying "I told you so!"

I have also often thought it would be nice if people only blogged a couple of days at a time as it is always nice to see peoples suggestions for each theme popping up over the course of a week....but hey, I just take these things too seriously so my better half tells me ;-) Also, I did note Mandi producers comments that long lists help the team more!

Anyway, lets just stop chatting about it and GIO!

Love and peace to all bloggers, yes, even you Adam :)

Maria in Stirling who obviously has way too much time on her hands!!

    Aw, shucks.
