Wild at heart...

Bryan Burnett | 19:44 UK time, Tuesday, 25 January 2011

Tonight鈥檚 show brought in some good puns. I did enjoy Gie This Piece A Chance, Beef-52s, and It鈥檚 A Hard Egg but Glenn鈥檚 Nobody Knows The Truffle I鈥檝e Seen was pun of the night. 听

Somehow I have a feeling we wont be getting many requests for Cliff on Wednesday鈥檚 show. 鈥Born to be wild鈥 is the theme and we鈥檒l be celebrating the wild men and women of rock. 听From Courtney to Ozzy and from Janice to Jimi, get in touch with the stars who seemed to have no limits鈥 听

Apologies Paulo, I must have forgotten that was happening.. I'm up for whatever is next though.

I'm off to the Old Fruit Market on Friday evening to see Hidden Orchestra. I can hardly wait.

I don't mean to be po-faced but I'm having a little difficulty with this theme: celebrating what is often a profound inability to cope with ludicrous circumstances - Syd Barratt, who took so many mind altering drugs, it altered his mind permanently? The list is endless.

And, I've always been pretty unconvinced about the 'wild ones' - nine tenths of it is hyped up by the recording industry in cahoots with a cruel media who want to squeeze every sale by exploiting artists and putting them through the wringer for their own ends.

    Amy Winehouse springs to mind.

When their 15 minutes is up they are thrown to the wolves. Any wonder some lead unhappy, circumstance - led 'wild' lives?

Consequently, the ones I most admire are the ones who should be nuts but stay sane, like McCartney.

Just about everyone from the 60's fits this theme: far from being 'wild' they were mercilessly exploited.

I don't know where to begin: how about a tale of two Glasweigans: Jimmy McCullough wrote the Wings number 'Wino Junko' about Jack Bruce - yet, within a year or so, he too would succumb to an excessive drug habit. Jack had to leave the country to get away from booze & drugs and was lucky to get the liver transplant that saved his life.

Jimmy's fabulous song Medicine Jar - Wings stands as a tribute to his talent, cut short at 26, but ironically is an anti-drugs anthem.

After Cream broke up, Jack Bruce, Tony Williams and Jimi Hendrix were due to start rehearsals for their new band - but a week before they started, Jimi died. Jimi Hendrix, according to my reading, was a sensitive kinda guy who happened to die by accident but the wildness of his playing has been translated as a metaphor for his life - but he wasn't 'wild' in that sense.

So much of this theme is the celebration of circumstances that end in tragedy, I find it hard to be enthused... maybe I'm just tired.. let's see if I feel less po-faced tomorrow....there are some great Keith Moon stories...

Bryan, I've been requesting Medicine Jar for months now... I think its time the nation heard one of Glasgow's finest.

Failing that,of course, there's Tickets To Waterfalls - Jack Bruce

Hmmm slightly peeved that one of my all time favourite artists has had her reputation sullied indeed tradusced by any mention of confectionary. A truly fascinating character who has been to the edge and back several times but who has survived. Any radio show would be enhanced by her late 70's early 80's trio of lp's Broken English, dangerous Aquantinces, A Childs Adventure. If you like the Grace Jones material check these out.

    My favourite Marianne track:

    Marriane Faithful - Times Square

  • Comment number 24.

Oh and seconding Joes suggested Steve Earle track. The perfect choice and if he's not included in this theme.....

  • Comment number 25.

I once turned up to a deserted Candleriggs to see Steve Earle. Turned out he'd been jailed in America.

Janice and Jimi obviously had limits - death. Like Henri I would take no pleasure in celebrating the drug and alcohol abuse responsible for so much crime and misery. It's simply not glamorous or funny.

Wildness on stage is another story. Jerry Lee Lewis, miffed at being second on the bill, set fire to his piano on leaving the stage and said to the star, "Follow that, Chuck."

'Beware of the Flowers ('cause I'm sure they're gonna get you, yeah)'. ... John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett

The recent decision by the Canadian authorities to ban Dire Straits鈥 Money For Nothing from the airwaves after 25 years of almost constant airplay, has made me wonder if there might not be an opening here for us.
As far as I鈥檓 aware it took only one complaint about an offensive word in the lyrics to bring it down.
I鈥檓 currently scouring a handful of songs from those prog rock giants, Queen, in the hope I find something that might offend in these PC gone mad days we live in.

    Move It - Cliff Richard

Bryan I think you might have been a little unfair on Cliff's reputation as a wild man.

Here are some quotes about Cliff:

"He was an absolute madman on the rugby pitch. He would go for you and his whole intention was to get you."

"He was terribly aggressive. He would go in hard. No one wanted to get tackled by Harry Webb, as we knew him in those days. He didn鈥檛 mind getting dirty."

    And from the man himself:

"I learnt that if you got in quick, you could inflict damage, even on a big guy. I'd go in with all fists flailing."

  • Comment number 54.

Well, I suppose one way of figuring out who qualifies is to see what comments the moderator takes out - but it makes for a boring show if anything worth hearing about is already deleted...

...and, on checking out the 'Mars Bar Party' Norrie will be pleased to know this is just exactly the kind of salacious media made up nonsence I was referring to above. Inspector Slipper, I think it was, who was always accompanied by the News of The Screws every time he busted a pop star.

Makes you wonder about Tommy ...you see.. if only Tommy had been a pop star or a poet like Burns or his namesake, Sheridan...yer poets can play naked leap frog and people form a queue to join in - wheras, if a politician or a football pundit or me does it we are doomed, as Pte Fraser would say:-)Mind you, as Oscar Wilde put it 'never defend a liable action if its true'.. and he should know.

The Who found themselves in Heffner's mansion where the rules concerning Bunny Girls were strictly 'look, don't touch'. Keith Moon did an Andy Grey, but worse, to which Heffner responded "That's just a small mark in my little black book, Keith, baby".

Realising he hadn't gone far enough, Moon responded by carving his initials out on Heffner's magnificent dinning room table and when discovered asked "What does that constitute in your little black book, Hef, baby?

A lifetime ban, it turned out.

There is, of course, poor Kevin Godley of 10CC, who, on taking possession of Keith Moon's former home was startled to discover a Rolls Royce parked in the swimming pool.

Big 2nd for the other Who suggestions but I'd like to hear

    My Wife - The Who

a rare John Entwhistle number which is especially appropriate tonight as it describes the kind of domestic meyhem that these people live with.. good tune, great story, and worth a listen

But I still think we should hear Medicine Jar - Wings

    Re#27 -

Is Jimmy Osmond one of the wild men of pop? Those of us old enough to remember the vid which accompanied "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool" will perhaps the flying spittle into the TOTP audience. This action was subsequently copied by the Sex Pistols amongst others. Could it therefore be argued that Jimmy was the original punk and so qualifies for "Wild Man" status? We should be telt......
