New year tunes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:57 UK time, Tuesday, 4 January 2011

It's been argued that making new year's resolutions is a bit of a waste of time and causes a lot more stress in the long run. And let's face it not many of us have stuck to them. On Wednesday's show I'll be asking which songs would make a good resolution for you. Will yours be Relax or Keep On Running? Get in touch and let me know and the good news is that at 8pm you'll be allowed to break them...

    WEDNESDAY

Funny things, walls. Some folk want in...

"If it kills I will surround myself with four stone walls,
A little pride upon the shelf and four stone walls around me."

    'Four Stone Walls' - Capercaillie

    ...and some want oot.

"I can't go back down to Raiford,
I can't take that any more."

    'Four Walls of Raiford' -

  • Comment number 2.

What are the themes for Thursday and Friday? They went in one ear and oot t'other...

  • Comment number 3.

Having now lived in eight decades:

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead - Warren Zevon

  • Comment number 4.

Eight.... who would have thought it Glen. Congratulations.

  • Comment number 5.

We don't make new years resolutions in this household. At least, not publically. They have a nasty habit of coming undone very quickly with no net gain for anyone.
So the following can be freely ignored on that basis.

    Supergrass Moving
I hate my job. Not because of the nature of the work, just the iniquities in the office. But it's a wage even if it's not a living. Perhaps new pastures green would be a good idea.
Manny also has itchy feet. Selling up and reforming sounds quite enticing. You have to have some aspirations.

    Eurythmics Sweet Dreams

  • Comment number 6.

#3 Hats off to you, sir. Tell me your secret - what keeps you so cheery?

  • Comment number 7.

Jeezuz.. eight, quite a thought, really. Good on ye, Glen.

But then, forced to think about it, I realise I'm at seven.

I think it's going to be a tough old year for lots of us.

Churchill said, 'If you're going through hell, keep going' and I'm kind of with that.

I've no great sensation of optimism, I have to say, therefore a year of Churchillian stoicism seems to be in order.

Like everyone, I've made lots of mistakes,I'm sure, and given the sad obituary I'm sure we've all just read of Gerry Rafferty, I think my resolutions will be based around:

Get It Right Next Time - Gerry Rafferty

  • Comment number 8.

"Oh my next thirty years, I’m gonna watch my weight
Eat a few more salads and not stay up so late
Drink a little lemonade and not so many beers
Maybe I’ll remember my next thirty years"

My Next Thirty Years - Tim McGraw

  • Comment number 9.

    Resolution 1:

    Time Management

Out of Time - Chris Farlowe
Funny How Time Slips Away - Willie Nelson

    Resolution 2:

    Alcohol, no not more!

Underneath The bottle - Lou Reed
    Stop Drinking - Van Morrison

  • Comment number 10.

If anyone has resolved to walk 500 miles in 2011 can they change their mind please

  • Comment number 11.

Paolo, I assume that putting Sunshine on Leith is out as well?

  • Comment number 12.

Anyone in leith with an old friend Blue....

  • Comment number 13.

#5 My resolution is to cut down my stupidly long commute to Livi every day, so has something in common with yours MD. These last two snowy winters have made up my mind for me.
I actually like my job tho' so will maybe have to flit to somewhere further east. It would be great to hear "Moving" so 2nds for that.
In the interests of variety i'm gonna suggest....

    Move On - David Bowie

This track has the added connotation of new relationships, which is also appropriate for me, here's hoping 2011 is the lucky year.

    Paul from Ayr

  • Comment number 14.

#13 great post Paul - good luck with all that. Oh and great track (ps its All The Young Dudes backwards).

  • Comment number 15.

#7 just realised I'm in seventh too. A sobering thought.

    Wednesday:

I do my best to raise money for charities in a variety of ways and I want to encourage others to contribute more in 2011. It's RNLI SOS fundraising the last weekend in January so I resolve to

Give a little bit - Supertramp

    DC

  • Comment number 16.

#1 you still seguing or are you building a house for the New Year?

Thou wall, O wall, O sweet and lovely wall,
Show me thy chink, to blink through with mine eyne!

    Wall holds up his fingers

Thanks, courteous wall: Jove shield thee well for this!
But what see I? No Thisby do I see.
O wicked wall, through whom I see no bliss!
Cursed be thy stones for thus deceiving me!

    Shakespeare

pS welcome back Space Truckin and welcome georgecool.

  • Comment number 24.

#14 thanks Norrie! And I didn't know it had anything to do with backward dudes!
#17 Good one Paolo, lol. BTW a west based radio station invited folks to choose between two tracks out of respect for Gerry Rafferty this morning...the choice was Baker St or Stuck in the Middle.
I agree with you though that "Right Down the Line" is the top one from the man as it has a real feelgood factor about it.

  • Comment number 25.

#22 have done now - terrific! A band that's passed me by entirely

  • Comment number 26.

    #23 I think george is a pal of jacqueline's.

  • Comment number 27.

#24 did they not have a choice of two songs for Mick Karn of Japan who died yesterday as well? I never got Japan. Just didn't do anything for me. I once won a japan album off the Tom ferrie show on radio scotland which was a gatefold sleeve of Quiet Life and gave it away not realising the gatefold sleeve was quite rare. I later saw it advertised in record collector for three figure sums.

  • Comment number 28.

Whatever's written in your heart.... that's all that matters!

    Thanks for the music Gerry.

  • Comment number 29.

"Never wanted many things except the chance to learn from my mistakes
Funny how you never learn but know them when they come round again"

    Echobelly - 'Great Things'

  • Comment number 30.

I have resolved not to make any New Year resolutions as I can't see the point of them. I will maintain the same positive attitude no matter what 2011 brings. You never know what is around the corner so just live life for the moment!

  • Comment number 31.

I would just like to echo the sentiments expressed above about Gerry Rafferty. He will be sadly missed but luckily he has left a legacy of great music. Pity that he is known mainly for two tracks though.

  • Comment number 32.

#2 Thursday - computers and other technologies, Friday - guilty pleasures

  • Comment number 33.

My new years resolution is to move on and stop my heart breaking.

Getting over You by Janis Ian.

I'm back home in Russia. Your weather is too cold.

  • Comment number 34.

    #30 well said Billy.

Alive in the World - Jackson Browne

I want to live in the world, not inside my head
I want to live in the world, I want to stand and be counted
With the hopeful and the willing
With the open and the strong
With the voices in the darkness
    Fashioning daylight out of song
    And the millions of lovers
    Alive in the world

I want to live in the world, not behind some wall
I want to live in the world, where I will hear if another voice should call
    To the prisoner inside me
To the captive of my doubt
Who among his fantasies harbors the dream of breaking out
    And taking his chances
    Alive in the world

thanks, Jackson, for putting it so well for me

    Thanks, Billy!

  • Comment number 37.

Seconds for funny how time slips away
    Fourths for keep on truckin

    Has technology overtaken space yet?

They say Good Riddance to bad rubbish so I resolve to declutter this year and get rid of all the stuff that just gets in the road of me reaching stuff I really need. I also resolve to start recycling stuff as i am guilty of just chucking everything in the one bin.

    Good Riddance / Green Day

Can't see it giving me the time of my life but its an appropriate title and band name.

  • Comment number 38.

    #33
Finally given up on Olga then? Shame. Dont be a stranger though.

    #20
Good to have you back Space Truckin, but who's your friend George?

    #37
The Capt might be able to answer that PP but he's been quiet for a bit.

  • Comment number 39.

    A New Year.

    A New Decade.

    Same old themes.

  • Comment number 40.

    #1
Capercaille - 4 Stone Walls is a great shout.

    #13
I gave up on the long commute from Berwickshire to Livi last Christmas (22nd Dec 2009, the day the blizzards started). I now live in Bathgate, which is a wee hop step & a skip away. I still got snowed in at the start of Dec, mind.

  • Comment number 41.

    #39 L.O.L.

Try a little tenderness ~ Otis Redding

  • Comment number 42.

My boss' resolution was to give up swearing in the office/on global conference calls.

On the evidence of 1 day back so far: multiple FAIL.

    So can we have
    * Monty Python -
(or of course, the original version of Cee-Lo Green's "Forget You" before it got the radio friendly treatment)

  • Comment number 43.

very good, Madmac. That's reminded me about a programme on Otis Redding I sort of listened to when I was poorly. I think I'll have a listen again now I'm more with it. Cue hysterical laughter from friends and family.

But just think, if you were a song-writer and had just put down the last notes of I've Been Loving You Too Long. What would you do with the rest of your life?

  • Comment number 44.

    #43
Concentrate on lowering my golf handicap, Gaie.

    Get Down - Gene Chandler

  • Comment number 45.

  • Comment number 46.

Have another look for 'I'm Gonna Shine Today' by Maurice Chevalier will you!!!...can't find any songs about putting the cat on a diet...so...that song pretty much sums up the mindset I'd like to have from this year!

  • Comment number 47.

I to am a believer in the benefits of keeping regular.

  • Comment number 48.

    Cap'n,

    The answer is Paul Brady!

    What was the question?

  • Comment number 49.

    #46

    Julie,

    Is the cat called

  • Comment number 50.

#49 The cat is disturbingly similar to Garfield!
