Top Girls...

Bryan Burnett | 20:02 UK time, Monday, 10 January 2011

This week in 1953 Jo Stafford was the first woman to get to number one in the UK singles charts so Tuesday's theme will be about the ones who followed. Who is your number one girl? (Obviously as I value my job then mine is Miss Babs!) We'll include the women who got to number one as part of a group as well as the solo acts.

Merely a by the by... Vicki Peterson of The Bangles was apparently born on this day in 1958 they had a UK No.1 with Eternal Flame!

Or wuz it a burnin' bush?

  • Comment number 10.

Doris Day - 'Perhaps' this will be played!

  • Comment number 11.

I'll second Deniece Williams - 'Free'.

Yesterday, someone suggested Helen Shapiro's 'Walkin Back To Happiness' but I wouldn't want to claim credit for it tonight, though it would be good to hear.I sometimes get it mixed up with a reggae inspired thing called ' My Boy Lollipop' by Millie. Both were part of my childhood. Both were number 1's ( I think).

However, what I'd really like to hear is

Band Of Gold - Freda Payne

A belter of a record and packed with such a powerful message: if only we'd had the courage not to consummate our marriages things would have been so much simpler in the end. Still love it.Recorded for the 'Invectus'? label, which was a break away thing from something else - can't have been Motown? - though it sounds like a Motown record.

  • Comment number 14.

Is number 11 on "the billboard" acceptable? If not, why not?? Surely it's twice as good as a number 1?
Peggy Lee Is That All There Is?
Just about sums it up, with a lovely wee shrug.
The night the wee wimmin' of music are reduced to being represented by their number one hits..... come on. Too many great female musicians never got to the top spot. Same goes for plenty male musicians.
But, if that's all there is...............

  • Comment number 15.

  • Comment number 22.

This is more difficult than it looks due to the fact that many great female artists only had number ones in the US. I had to discount Cyndi Lauper, Gladys Knight and Stevie Nicks before deciding on this one....

All Around the World - Lisa Stansfield

    Paul from Ayr

    #15 Number 2, what a shame!!

  • Comment number 27.

#12 Great shout Henri. Invictus Records was set up by Holland, Dozier and Holland after they left Motown. It's said that they co-wrote 'Band of Gold' but under a pseudonym due to contractual problems with Motown.

  • Comment number 28.

    Duffy - Mercy (Feb 2008)

The Corrs - Breathless (July 2000)

Maria McKee - Show Me Heaven (Sept 1990)

I Knew You Were Waiting for Me - Aretha Frankin & George Michael (Feb 1987)

  • Comment number 29.

So what theme have you brought into the dragons den today?
No 1 hits by female artists.

Let's look at the list... Mmhmm uhu mmm
Yup most are overplayed and those that aren't are because they don't deserve to be.
A few good singers but their best songs didn't make it to the top so for that reason I'm out!

  • Comment number 30.

Beats International (with Lindy Layton on vocals) - 'Dub Be Good To Me'.

Soul II Soul (feat Caron Wheeler) - 'Back To Life'

    Mel + Kim - 'Respectable'

    Estelle - 'American Boy'

  • Comment number 31.

There is a lack of harmony on the blog today! (Did you see what I did there?)

Tonight I want to hear the first UK #1 by a teenager. Despite what it says in the

    Guinness Book Of Hit Singles

Me and Paolo and Glen all agree and I want Bryan to back us up on air!

Think of the publicity for the show!

re comments on repeat themmes by MMac + Gaie yesterday ... have to agree.

Let's out the old + bring in the new (ideas) for 2011. Given the well documented wisdom, and repartee of the vast majority of the GIO listening public, this should be a breeze.

Bloggers ... set the ball rolling with some fresh suggestions please.

GIO Prod team ... please review past themes to avoid (even tenuous)duplication.

What happened to all of the good suggestions we were told had flooded in during the A to Z run last year? Haven't seen much evidence since.

Dictionary def of 'Fresh' ... "new, unused"
or also "cheeky" ... which I hope I have deemed to be not ...

never an easy task, due to their uncanny propensity to talk for hours about the infectious attraction of (mainly) liquidised vegetables. So then, how to distract them back to their day job, i.e. concentrating on playing fresh tracks from fresh bands based on fresh themes? How indeed ........?

Of course the late Hilda's tinkling of the ivories can also be heard on Springsteen's "Aint Good Enough For You" which is on the radio a lot at the moment. Hilda being a session musician on the Darkness on the Edge of Town recordings.
