Double the fun...

Bryan Burnett | 20:01 UK time, Monday, 14 March 2011

Vomiting babies, 100 day bike rides, weddings and foxes' poo! We certainly covered a lot on tonight's show. Thanks to all who got in touch with the songs that best described their day. Tomorrow night is a much more 'blog friendly' theme. We're looking for your suggestions of the best double albums of all time. We'll accept live or greatest hits albums but it would be good to get plenty of suggestions for those artists who were so prolific that they couldn't contain their talent on one album...

Another great theme, double albums are great and gives the chance to select some really good more obscure tracks:

Thge Clash - nSandinista (3lp) - The Call Up

Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde (2lp) - Absolutely Sweet Marie

Springsteen - The River (2lp) - Fade away

Van Morrison - Hymns To The Silence (2lp) - Why Must I always Explain

Simple Minds - Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call (SFC a freebie) - Sweat In Bullet

Skids - Absolute Game ( free Strength Through Joy lp) - Arena

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk (2lp) - Sara (for DC)

The Photos (with free "The Blackmail tapes") - Barbarellas

Deacon Blue - Raintown (with free lp riches) - Kings Of the Western World

  • Comment number 2.

The Who had two double studio albums

    Tommy - Amzing Journey

Quadrophenia - Love Reign O'er Me

The Clash of course also had

London Calling - Lost In The Supermarket

  • Comment number 3.

Malcolm Middleton - Long, Dark Night and Malcolm Middleton With Band! Live in Zurich! a double album released at the end of last year and wot he gave me a copy of personally, she said shamelessly name-dropping

A Brighter Beat - Malcolm Middleton

  • Comment number 4.

and yet another oporchancity to get El Rayo-X on

    TUESDAY

'The Continuing Story of Barnacle Bill' - Beatles ~ The Beatles

For DC. What else is on the White album?

  • Comment number 10.

Will they play anything from Metal Machine Music.....

  • Comment number 11.

Village Ghettoland - Stevie Wonder - (Songs in the Key of Life)

What is Life? - George Harrison - (All Things Must Pass)

  • Comment number 12.

Here is an odd thing with the digital / cd age. A lot of what were double lp,s are now of course single cd's. But the converse is also true. A lot of single cd releases appear on double vinyl. Possibly for a lot of the younger listeners this will be an odd concept as for download lp's there is no side a, b let alone sides 1 to 4!

A lot of single lp's have been massively extended as well to be double cd's but they were only single lp's to start with.

    Help.

    Any of that make sense?

  • Comment number 13.

A no-brainer for me. What a lucky coincidence.
    Elton John
    Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Too many crackers to mention, will go for one asked for before but not played (as far as I know. And I don't know much)
    I've Seen That Movie Too
I don't necessarily see this as a "romance" song - it pretty much applies to anyone who tries to play mind games with folk.
Saying that, they are being applied as I type. So that's my lot for tonight.

  • Comment number 14.

    TUESDAY

Every track on this album is a stoater. To give tonight's producer a break, I'll nominate the shortest one. 3:37

'I Ain't the One' - Lynyrd Skynyrd ~ One More From the Road

Recorded live at the Fox Theatre, Atlanta, Georgia in July 1976

'Bourée' - Jethro Tull ~ Living in the Past (Instrumental) 3:43

Ian Anderson's interpretation of J.S. Bach.

N.B. Although the track is on the 1972 vinyl release, it does not appear on the CD.

You can find it on the album 'Stand Up', or as a bonus track on the 'Aqualung' CD.

  • Comment number 15.

Busy being fabulous / eagles from long road out of Eden

Lend your love to me tonight / Greg lake from ELP Works

Harmony / Elton John from goodbye yellow brick road

Top shouts with Simple Minds - Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call ~ Sweat In Bullet & Skids - Absolute Game ~ Arena. Any one of these would be good in a B.B. stylee... All you need now is an edgy producer!

Stevie Wonder ~ Pastime Paradise(Songs in the Key of Life)

Earth Wind & Fire ~ And Love Goes On (Faces)

Jean-Michel Jarre ~ Arpegiator (Concerts In China)

Yes ~ Ritual (Tales From Topographic Oceans) especially for 'enri!

    ELP ~ C'est la Vie (Works Vol.I)

    Focus ~ Sylvia (Focus III)

Man ~ Spunk Rock (Greasy Truckers Party)

Wendy Carlos ~ Spring (Sonic Seasonings)

The Damned ~ Wait for the blackout (The Black Album)

    oh, and of course

Is it just me or anyone else having trouble remembering what were doubles and what were just gatefold sleeves

  • Comment number 19.

#18 that is funny Paolo...I ws sent scuttling to check out the lp's. Trocadero was a gatefold sleeve...but a single lp. Foiled. As was Nighflight To Venus.

  • Comment number 20.

Whoops A Daisy... Get It On skeptic is shout something about Smashing Pumpkins ~ 1979 (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness)apparently!

    Paolo,

may help to jog your memory.

  • Comment number 22.

Another thing, I had a double 10" copy of The Police's Reggatta de Blanc back in the day, does that meet the criteria???
The Bed's Too Big Without You... so say's Mrs Mac, nighty night.

  • Comment number 23.

#1 always happy to support suggestions for Bob Dylan - I especially like Absolutely Sweet Marie
On a slightly different note one of the most classic double albums is Benny Goodman Live at Carnegie Hall (1938) - I would recommend one of the trio numbers "Body and Soul"
or, something from The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band "Will the circle be unbroken" such as "Cannonball Rag"

    Happy listening

  • Comment number 24.

Mother - Pink Floyd from The Wall

Good suggestions #1 Norrie. My wee lass is in the process of getting her CV into tip top condition so's she can apply for jobs upon graduation. Still seems like yesterday she was born...

#9 cheers Scotch. Just about warmed up now. Unfortunately I got beaten by darkness tonight so will have to repeat the exercise tomorrow to get all the bits I missed.

Hows about a White Album dedication for Adam?

"Everybody's got sometin to hide 'cept for me and my Mankini"

    Sinead O'Connor - Mother
    Bryan Adams - Young Lust
    Van Morrison - Comfortably Numb

    (I'm still in India btw)

  • Comment number 30.

Or we could have the Braggster's Greatest Hits compilation: Must I Paint You a Picture; specifically the title track, as his love songs are always underplayed/less well known.

    * Billy Bragg - Must I Paint You a Picture

  • Comment number 31.

This is a graaayyyttt opperchancity to hear less well-known album tracks. I hope we don't get the usual "Back in the USSR" or "Another brick in the wall" playlist.

  • Comment number 32.

    XTC - 'Ball and Chain'

    From 'English Settlement'

  • Comment number 33.

#21 Well SG your just reward for encouraging people to google is the fact that I had forgotten about the Smiths import lp which pulled together a whole pile of singles, b-side etc.

The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs 2lp -You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby

  • Comment number 34.

Triple LP...The Trojan Story: a turning point in my musical education:

'Soon You'll Be Gone - The Blues Busters
'Black + White' - The Maytones

  • Comment number 35.

    #31 Definitely!

Even if it's a greatest hits compilation, let's avoid the one most obvious one.

  • Comment number 36.

    Bulbous medal

  • Comment number 41.

'Never Can Say Goodbye' - Isaac Hayes (Black Moses)

  • Comment number 42.

    #41 superb track Julie,

Can't ignore the album cover at the top...

Black Country Woman - Led Zep......Physical Graffiti

Long May You Run - Neil Young.....Decade, OK it's a compilation but definitely one of the best, this track was previously unreleased at the time.

Julia - Beatles....White Album, Gorra have at least one suggestion in memory of the great blog debate

4th Time Around - Dylan..... one of many possibilities from the the wonderful "Blonde on Blonde" album

Make You Feel My Love - Dylan....Time Out of Mind, covered by practically everyone but the original is gruff and great!

Here At The Western World - Steely Dan.....Greatest Hits, again a terrific compilation album and this track had not been previously released at the time.

  • Comment number 43.

Good theme but spoiled by allowing live and greatest hits albums.

Agree with DC and the Captain about not having the singles played.

Could suggest gate sleeves as a theme Norrie...

    Anybody found Glen yet?

  • Comment number 44.

Let's start a rumour that the White Album is the best double ever. That'll get him out of the shadows!

    What about Helter Skelter?

  • Comment number 45.

#43 tend to agree, but Julie has some good Trojan suggestions

    #43 agree

#43 would be great, cannot see it

#43 still missing ~ he was looking for Bryans themes jotter which is still missing.

  • Comment number 46.

    #45
That's true. Especially the one about blowing one up and letting it float around Easter Road.

  • Comment number 47.

I don’t think there is much point in me making requests anymore so I will just stick to anagrams.

  • Comment number 48.

Just had a look at SG's list.
I didnt realise Thing Fish was a Frank Zappa album.

  • Comment number 49.

    I am a triple album.

  • Comment number 50.

First double album I bought was a CBS sampler called "Fill Your Head With Rock" in 1969 with everything from Laura Nyro to Al Stewart, Janis Joplin to MoonDog.Agree that live albums and greatest hits shouldnt count really.Trying hard to avoid Prog rock hell so how about
Todd Rundgren Something/Anything.."I Saw The Light"
Joni Mitchell Don Juan's Reckless Daughter... "Dreamland"
Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs ..."Wi nae wee Bairn Ye'll Me Beget"
If had to pick a live album would have to be Aretha's aptly titled "Amazing Grace" doubler. When I hear that voice I'm A believer!
Greatest Hits. Doors "Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine" ..."Road House Blues"Cheers Willie Bartke

  • Comment number 51.

Well, as we're having live albums and Frank beat me to Live n Dangerous, then how about

Only You Can Rock Me - UFO (from Strangers in the Night)

(Yes, yes I know - it was also a single)

  • Comment number 52.

I have bought a few cd's recently that come with the addition of a cd with the demo tapes, which is actually quite good.

Manic Street Preachers - Postcards From A Young man (with demos) - It's Not War Just The End Of Love (demo)

Indigo Girls - Poseidon and the Bitter Bug (with acoustic versions) - Ghost of the Gang" (Acoustic Version)

    and this week I bought

Lucinda Williams - Blessed (with "Kitchen sink versions") - Blessed (The Kitchen Tapes)

  • Comment number 53.

I can only recall 2 genuine vinyl double albums that I bought: Ummagumma from Pink Floyd and Wheels of Fire from Cream. Still have them in the attic. I guess you won't be playing Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun any time soon so how about White Room which features Clapton soon after he discovered the wah wah pedal - lovely. He introduced hendrix to the pedal and look what happened next...
btw Wheels of Fire was first double album to go platinum, so it must deserve a spot....

  • Comment number 54.

    Taxi / Harry Chapin
    From greatest stories live
    For taxi drivers everywhere

    Mr Handley
    An outstanding steely dan suggestion.
Bought that album before the sixth year disco when they were still called sixth year discos cos a steely dan tribute band were playing

  • Comment number 55.

will there be a triple album theme or could the Band's Last Waltz make it on to this show? Great film, great concert. The historic track to play would be I Shall be Released, which featured everybody who was anybody.

On CD a great double I have is The Who, Live at Leeds. Sadly I seem to play it only when a bit the worse for wear, new copy required. So the standout version of Pinball Wizard would be a treat

  • Comment number 56.

Kene Gelly -yes of course, Electric Ladyland also! I've got the original with nudes in the attic (Wikip says: '(Hendrix)...expressly asked for a color photo by Linda Eastman of the group sitting with children on a sculpture from Alice in Wonderland in Central Park, NY, even drawing a picture of it for reference'. Instead 'Track Records...produced a cover depicting 19 nude women lounging in front of a black background'. Oh, well..

Come On (Part 1). Not enough of hendrix solos on his albums so this is great.

  • Comment number 57.

  • Comment number 58.

A mental couple of days - all my shouts are already made by my peers. so a big 2nd to those who requested the under noted and some additional suggestions.

The great White Album debate of 2010 affirmed that double albums are a mixed blessing.

My choice from that is 'I Will' or 'Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except for Me & My Monkee'

I also had 'Fill Your Head Head With Rock: Six Days On The Road - Taj Mahal

I also had 'Wheels Of Fire' - Cream - Deserted Cities Of the Heart Jack Bruce did a latin influenced White Room at the Arches the other week, which, again, with the brass section, sounded fabby.

I did not have the Steely Dan Double Greatest Hits, but later got Here In The Western World on the 4 CD compilation 'Citizen' - which I love.

afraid not, though I think Raintown sounds okay.

I think the 'Nice Enough To Eat' sampler was a double album - anyway, the one I had had 'Song For Suzie - Heads Hands & Feet on it. Great Track.

After our faither requested them a few weeks ago I 'one clicked' their album 'Tracks' on amazon. Absolutely brilliant - 'the albums of forgotten song' as my hero put it.
