Not so big hitters...

Bryan Burnett | 20:03 UK time, Wednesday, 19 October 2011

That was a really interesting show tonight with some brilliant suggestions of songs that are still relevant decades after they were written. Interesting to see the effect that some of those songs had on people who were hearing them for the first time - Iris DeMent's Wasteland of the Free was a good example of this.

Tomorrow the bloggers will be delighted to hear that the theme is 'not the obvious one'. For instance you might ask for Chocolate Girl instead of Dignity or Being Boring instead of West End Girls. Ignore the big hit and come up with the one that wasn't quite so well known.

I take it this theme will only work if we concentrate on acts famous for one or two key songs rather than those that have several well known ditties

    Dory Previn:

This subject came up last week and when it did I dug out my copy of 'Mythical Kings & iguanans'.

In the exposion of singer songwriters of the early 70's, this artist and this completely marvellous gem of an album have been a tad overlooked/ forgotten. It's an 'obvious' less obvious choice filled witn blisteringly honest and amusing lyrics and beautiful melodies.

The track I's like to put up is Lady With The Braid - Dory Previn. There is every chance this isn't in the library, so I'll take my copy with me tomorrow and hand it in if it's not available. The public should hear this.

    THURSDAY

    Romeo
    - Dolly Parton

One of my favourites, featuring Mary Chapin Carpenter, Pam Tillis, Tanya Tucker, Kathy Mattea and Billy Ray Cyrus as Romeo. (Single in U.S.)

Farm on the Freeway - Jethro Tull

    Another favourite. (Single in U.S.)

    Mr. Banker - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Guitar pickin' blues, a departure from their usual style. B-Side of Gimme Three Steps

    Love is Life
    - Hot Chocolate

Not their first single, but their first hit. Never gets airplay. Why? Dunno...

Why Don't I Run Away from You? - Kiki Dee

A brilliant cover of the Tami Lynn song.

Dust in the Wind - Melanie

Never released as a single, but the best version of this Kansas song, IMHO.

    Rat'll do the noo...

Chuck Berry - 'You Can't Catch Me'...a good bit of rockabilly (listen carefully now...where did The Beatles get the idea for 'Come Together’ I wonder?)

ÌýEddie Cochrane – ‘Sittin’ On The Balcony (luuurve the ending!)ÌýAlice Cooper - ignore Schools out'...play 'I Never Cry' (Alice does soft rock ballad)

The Undertones - Forget the usual teenage kicks etc...play what I think is their best song...'You've Got My Number (Why Don't You Use It)

ÌýThe Marvelettes - They did the original Please Mr Postman but play 'My Baby Must Be A Magician' instead…it’s much better.Ìý

    Pulp - Not the usual 2 or 3 songs please...play 'Mis-Shapes'Ìý

Ian Dury and The Blockheads - All his stuff is great but let's hear 'The Passing Show' (superb backing from The Blockheads)Ìý

Pat Benetar - ditch Love Is A Battlefield...play her cover of Alan Parsons 'Don't Let It Show'.Ìý

Garbage - play 'Special' for a change...great song, seldom heard.Ìý

The Animals - Don't suppose 'Many Rivers To Cross' will have been played regularly on radio.Ìý

Desmond Dekker - We usually hear The Israelites but you could play the jolly wee 'Sing A Little Song' instead.Ìý

Ike + Tina Turner - 'A Fool In Love' would make a change from River Deep etc.Ìý

Harry Nillson however did a good version of 'River Deep Mountain High'Ìý

    Clarence Frogman Henry - I don't know why I love 'Ain't Got No Home'...but I do!Ìý

    Andy Williams thinks he's Elvis...'Butterfly'Ìý

Aretha Franklin – ÌýDon’t ‘Think’ about it…play ‘Baby I Love You’ (it’s not the Ronettes song)Ìý

B-52s – ‘Good Stuff’ is just as good stuff as Love ShackÌý

Gladys Knight and The Pips – Midnight Train’s great but try ‘On and On’ insteadÌý

Matthews Southern Comfort – didn’t just sing Woodstock…’The Brand New Tennessee Waltz’ is a great record.Ìý

Sinead O’Connor – ‘the Last Day Of our Acquaintance’ is just as powerful as Nothing Compares 2 UÌý

The Band – Ìýinstead of ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’, try playing ‘Whispering Pines’…it’s a lovely lovely
    song

  • Comment number 34.

  • Comment number 38.

I have been suggesting this thread for ages under the name of 'Overshadowed Hits'

My favourite Roxy single is 'Both Ends Burning' overshadowed by its famous big brother 'Love Is The Drug' (Mr Burnett if you play this please don't talk over the Siren going off at the start, that's the best bit)

'Take A Chance With Me' from the 'Avalon' album is seen as the Cinderella as the two ugly sisters 'More Than This' and 'Avalon' get all the airplay.

'Windswept' from Bryan Ferry's 'Boys And Girls' album is overshadowed by 'Slave To Love' and Don't Stop The Dance'

    J.O'B.

I would interprit this theme as singles that were overshadowed by the bigger hit from the same album.

Stiff Little Fingers - Tin Soldiers instead of Alternative Ulster

    * Bragg - Tank Park Salute
amazingly touching song, that's neither an outright political track nor a simple love song. It's about fathers and sons and life and death...
    * Bruce - Eyes on the Prize
    * Elvis Costello - Watching the Detectives
    * Fairport Convention - London River
    * George Michael - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
(or pretty much anything from the Songs From The Last Century album)
    * Hooters - Karla with a K in preference to Satellite. It's a great track!
    * Madness - Shame and Scandal from the Dangermen Sessions
    * Mike Oldfield - On Horseback - JFE & I have been requesting it for years now!
    * Pink Floyd - Bike
    * The Saw Doctors - Haywrap Get That Wasp Aff My Sandwich!
