X Offenders...

Bryan Burnett | 20:01 UK time, Thursday, 20 October 2011

It seems that tonight was a theme you were crying out for. We can all be a bit guilty of choosing the obvious songs to play so having a theme of the less obvious ones really worked. There were many familiar big hitters but I don't think anything felt 'overplayed'. Thanks to everyone who took some time to think about their offerings.

Tomorrow it's 'reality TV stole my song' as we reclaim the songs that were covered on X Factor and the like. So whether you are a lover of Adele, Leonard Cohen or Biffy Clyro tomorrow night is a chance for you to save their reputation.

I had suggested a Glee theme before and with a dstraight face. my daughter for one is listening to a huge range of great artists because of this programme and I tghink of x factor in muvh the same way.

Anyway back to the point Hallelujah was totally ruined by X factor. To my surprise this was actually ok:

    David Bowie. Heroes.

That said please play the original!

For anyone interested here is the latest x factor betting for this coming weekend
    4/6 girl greets first
    11/10 boy greets first
5/2 two or more people greet
5/1 three or more people greet
8/1 the same person greets more than once

    1/2 someone nails that song
    4/5 someone owns that song

Great chance to win some money cos I'll have to take your word for it. won't be able to watch it as I've got a tape to rewind.

X Factor America ruined these for me:

Van Morrison - In The Days Before Rock n Roll

Tom Russell - East Of Woodstock, WEst Of Vietnam

Bob Seger - Still The Same

I mean what were they thinking of!

You must have strained your eyes with the new gadget. If you look more closely you'll see it's an old picture of Capt. Ramius and Jim from Erskine in their naturist band, Dong.

#7. I've watched American Idol and it's introduced me to some good songs..in particular Melinda thingywhotsit (the one with the amazing voice but no neck) singing 'Trouble Is A Woman'. Originally sung by Julie Reeves (I think but one can never be sure...you know how they say things like "tonight Simon, I will be singing 'Without You' by Mariah Carey")

  • Comment number 10.

I actally think they should change the theme to include the songs you've heard murdered on X Factor etc but which have lead you to discover/rediscover the original version and more by the original singers:

e.g. Solomon Burke - 'Up To The Mountain'...wonderful song

Btw that Adam Ant song tonight was pretty blimmin' good.

Or indeed the fabulous "Ken Lee"

jeez ... remember that episode when that guy (the one that sang ilke every other guy there's ever been on that prog) sang an out of key, tempo, imagination and individuality version of ...

'Sometime Around Midnight' ~ Airborne Toxic Event

    ???

My pal's auntie that lives next door to the girl who walks the dog of the cleaner in the biscuit factory whose boss watches the x factor told me that on falsetto night someone ruined

    Float on / The Floaters

    15 themes and counting......

  • Comment number 14.

The end of the road - Boyz 2 Men
    Independence day - Gretchen Peters
    Anyway - Martina McBride
    Valerie - the Zutons
    Feeling Good - Nina Simone
I wanna dance with somebody - Whitney Houston
    Purple rain - Prince

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 15.

Terrible terrible rendition of a lovely song by Mr AN OTHER X-Factor wannabe :*( seriously I really wish I had never hear that eejit murdering the song.

That being said some justice could be returned by playing the orginal and best version.

    Iris - Goo Goo Dolls

  • Comment number 16.

    Another possibility would be

Ironically it wasn't too bad a cover from the x factor guy not brilliant but certainly better than some of the so called "singers" on most of these reality shows.

    Cannonball - Damien Rice

  • Comment number 17.

Liked the Dougie MacLean track last night. Good show.

  • Comment number 18.

I thought this would be the theme that would leave me completely stumped as I can honestly say I've never seen the X Factor.

I don't know if this makes me a sad git, but for whatever reason (no telly, among others) I just haven't seen it and have never been inclined to look it up on i-player/You Tube.

So, I have looked up the lists of songs performed (Wiki) - interestingly, each episode seems to be thematic in terms of musical content - wonder where they got that idea from?

Anyway, since the show seems to be aspiring artists/performers covering well known standards form different genres, I thought I would also pick cover versions that I think are an improvement on the original.

Umbrella - Manic Street Preachers I ran a campaign on this a year or so ago and managed to get it played on GIO, but it's great stuff and worthy of being heard again. It's given the Manics 'anthemic' treatment and will be a treat to sing along to in the car.

Could It Be Magic? - Donna Summer Turning a Barry Manilow ballad into a disco classic must have seemed an unlikely prospect, the thing is -however unlikely... Could It Be Magic? - Well, when Donna does it, Yes, it is magic..great teatime music -let's get it on. Very like my mother on this one!

Marked Deck - The Fabulous Thunderbirds
Someday, Someway - The Jeff Healey Band
Cold Shot - Stevie Ray Vaughan

Have enjoyed the show this week but pretty lost as to tonights theme as I haven't saw X-factor since Leona Lewis won it. 2006 wiki reliably informs me.
My daughters liked one of the guys, Ben Mills, who actually had a decent voice but obviously didny win, but we had to watch the series anyway. The MacDonald Brothers were also on that one.

    Anyhoose, enough said..

Try A Little Tenderness - Otis

Dancing in the Moonlight - Toploader

Both suitably mauled on the show around that time.

  • Comment number 21.

Never seen the X factor or been inclined to watch it or similar shows but here goes:

Snow Patrol - Run (covered by the aforementioned Leona)

Subo did no a bad stab at Wild Horses but not a patch on the Stones version so please play that.

  • Comment number 22.

Some younger bloggers may not realise that there were TV talent shows many years ago.
In the 60s a lot of ballroom dancers were miffed when their music for the cha-cha was nicked by Tony Holland on Opportunity Knocks.

  • Comment number 23.

This year's X Factor is pretty bad...compared to other series I mean.Ìý I have watched all the series...I must be mad.Ìý Even the FB and Twitter rantings seem to have dried up this year. I amuse myself by yelling at the telly

I know some people enjoy the auditions but really, a few can sing but the majority are obviously broadcast for their comedic value. I say comedic value but I really cannot bear watching folk making fools of themselves

I could not stand Ray Quinn, the wee Liverpudlian Sinatra wannabe who fancied himself so much and got away with churning out swing versions of about every song he sang

You could play Dean Martin's 'Ain't That A Kick In The Head'...Ray's version has insinuated itself into my mind and now I'm all out of sorts

I do however quite enjoy the Judges' Houses shows...The number of tears shed could fill all the swimming pools the poor contestants stand next to while warbling their hearts and souls out (It means absolutely everything to them you know...EVERYTHING...MORE THAN EVERYTHING!!!)

I imagine Dermott O'Leary ambushing them, on their way to sing, armed with half an onion...and a sharp stick just in case the onion doesn't provoke enough tears.Ìý Then, when the judges are telling them whether or not they've made it to the live shows, the producers stand just off-camera and kill a puppy or put the contestants's entire stock of false eylashes, favourite JLS-style poncy snood or their hair extensions through a shredder...just to make sure the requisite amount of blubbering takes place

One good thing about this year though...Louis's group didn't end up going to Dublin!!!Ìý About time...previous year's Louis's Groups must've been so jealous of the others jetting off to the USA or South of France while they went to Dublin with the one from Westlife or Boyzone nobody remembers the name of. Poor Tesco Mary's probably fuming that this year they were in Barcelona

American Idol had a far better standard of singing...and a lot of country and soul songs...last year Alfred. E. Neuman won it! He's rather good! (google it ;o)

By coincidence they played it in HMV today - instantly recognisable from the first strummed chord. A great song from a great album.

    Wild Horses - Rolling Stones

  • Comment number 35.

    #34

Agreed. Sublime album. Big 2nd for Wild Horses.

I didn't realise there was an HMV in Elgin. They obviously haven't gotten round to closing it yet. What else have you got left up there?

Remember earlier this year there was a docu-drama about a housing estate in Kilmarnock?

I believe the members of this band also come from Klmarnock.

One of their songs featured in a Max Factor commercial, I believe.

Hopefully this edifies on the yoof of today etc.

  • Comment number 40.

Well, as the Flying Burrito Brothers released their version first, you could argue that the Stones' rendition is the cover.

It was the girls in the office talking about it over lunch that brought it back to mind. It's a great thrill for me when they bring in their celebrity magazines and I have no idea who the people in the photies are.

  • Comment number 42.

    Ìý
There is a foolproof method of identifying the Radio Times without looking at the title.

It is the only T.V./Radio guide that does not have a photie of Jessie Wallace on the cover.

  • Comment number 43.

    #40

Excuse my poor expression. I meant original in respect of the Stripped remake. I should have said "earlier version" to avoid doubt and the risk of wounding, nitpicking comment.

    Bryan & Babs,

If we're gonna hear Wild Horses, can we please hear the original release by The Flying Burrito Brothers and not the Rolling Stones' cover version which, let's be honest, we've all heard a million times.

    Thank you!
