Extreme Values
If you want to see the perfect example of the word 鈥楨xtremes鈥 watch an episode of the American produced show 鈥楨xtreme Makeover鈥. Then watch an episode of the British produced show 鈥楤ig Brother鈥.
In 鈥楨xtreme Makeover鈥 you see an example of human nature at its best from one group of people who change another group鈥檚 lives beyond the limits of imagination.
In the show you meet people of all ages who have suffered the worst that life can throw at them.

Lessons from the past
I recently wrote on this blog about the next 100 years and now I would like to comment on the past.
The past came to mind when I saw an advert in the August 23rd for Bedroom Furniture.
Each item was described as Victorian in style. I studied it and realised how pleasing to the eye it was.

The role of the media
Where would we be today without the quick fire reports supplied by the media on millions of different subjects.
Television provides vivid pictures of war torn countries, and the devastation caused by man鈥檚 inhumanity to man.

A hundred years from now?
I wonder what the next century holds for the human race. In 100 years from now will everybody be living in a utopia? Or looking at the present, will it be a case of fortress earth with all borders closed?
At the moment the world is spiralling out of control in the areas of attitude to human values.

Radio
My radio is my constant companion. Music, to quote a well known song, is my first love.
But, I am an avid 础谤肠丑别谤鈥檚 Fan, and have been since I was seven years old. At school, I also religiously listened to Mrs Dale鈥檚 Diary.
My, how the style of radio broadcasting has changed over the decades. I鈥檓 tempted to say, I wish the good old days were still with us, when Sunday afternoons were spent with the family, in the company of Kenneth Horn, or Life with the Lyons, followed by Jimmy Clithero.

The power of radio
At the head of all technological advances throughout history, radio and telecommunication must come near the top.
When Marconi made the first transmission of one person鈥檚 voice to another over thousands of miles distance, civilisation took a great leap forward.
Added to the invention of the telephone a new era was opened up to the world鈥檚 populations

How Do I Look? - Am I Beautiful?
We are living in an age that seems to be dominated by our appearance. I don鈥檛 mean am I dressed nicely? Do I look smart?
There is a clamour among certain classes of people to alter their facial features. This yearning to look like an Adonis or A-dianna (The Greek Goddess) is prevalent among people in the entertainment world.
Cosmetic surgery has become so accessible though still out of range of the average worker that there is a case for saying it is being misused.

Bravery
81 year old John Quayle and his 80 year old wife Ann, have given up two days a week to do voluntary work at the .
John is a friendly Gentle Giant, and Ann is a small bubbly lady. She serves teas, helps with filing, and spends a lot of time talking to patients and ensuring that they are as comfortable as possible.

The way forward?
Progress is a theme that has been evolving ever since man has been able to reason. However progress relates to so many aspects of our lives it would be impossible to cover it all in a few pages, so let us take a few examples. But first progress can touch different people in different ways.
In the late 1970鈥檚 the newspaper tycoon introduced the latest technology into his business and at the same time laid off thousands of men. This caused a strike lasting quite a long time.
In the 1960鈥檚 in Liverpool 22,000 dockers were employed on the waterfront, today there are less than 500.

Crime 鈥 Causes and Cure
The country we live in at the moment seems to be in a state of lawlessness unparalleled in my lifetime, and nobody seems to have the answer to it. Yet the solutions seem to be obvious to the majority of the older population.
There was an old adage in the past that 鈥榯he punishment should fit the crime鈥; this no longer seems the case when a sentence to life imprisonment carries a proviso that the offender could be free in four to five years. Even then the time is served in prisons on a par with a three star hotel with privileges like T.V., poolrooms, gyms and access to things not available to some law abiding citizens.

Beauty and Cosmetics
Throughout history, many manufacturers of beauty products have battled against each other, to become the number one provider of creams, lotions, and make up to give the appearance of silky soft skin.
It isn鈥檛 easy to choose the right combination, as TV and Radio advertising gives you the impression that every product is the one and only beautifier you will need.
So, where do you begin?
-
Age
Are you the kind of person who worries about your age?
It would appear that if I do something, which is a little out of the ordinary, I am heard to comment, 鈥渋t鈥檚 my age.鈥I have software on my computer which because I am, to be politically correct, Visually Impaired reads any E-Mails and other items to me. I wonder if one day, the darn thing will lose it鈥檚 temper and yell at me 鈥渋t鈥檚 my age.鈥

Youth
How many times have you heard the expression,
鈥淚 don鈥檛 know, the youth of today鈥.
So, why do our youngsters have such a bad reputation? !alas! the youth clubs of the late fifties, early sixties are slowly vanishing from our towns and cities.Too many children are brought up with the idea that if they want something, then all they have to do is ask, and it shall be given.
That is why, when they reach the age when they should be independent and resourceful, they find it difficult to adapt.

Anti-Social Behaviour
When I speak of A.S.B, I think of the numerous times a day I pick up the telephone, dial a number, and, low and behold, I鈥檓 talking to an automated voice in a call centre.
Press one for this, two for that, and if you鈥檙e lucky, press zero to talk to one of our operators. I can never get in touch with the particular person I need to handle my enquiry.
-
Stress
The condition of stress in relation to a medical problem was virtually unheard of 20 years ago. I first heard it referred to as such while visiting a cousin in hospital about 12 years ago.
We were in the rest room and a nursing sister stopped for a chat. The talks centred on illnesses in general and she pinpointed one particular case she was involved in at that time.
A man had been admitted to one of her wards and after four days and five different doctors nobody could say what was wrong with him. However they all agreed he was ill.
-
Socialising
How many ways can you think of to meet and chat to friends other than face to face contact or the telephone?
I think that this is where Modern Technology has a very important part to play in a society which has become, in some ways, more interested in self preservation than having a meaningful social life.In years gone by, there was more time, or so it seemed, for neighbours to stop to pass the time of day.
-
Isolation
At 75 years of age and living on my own I know what loneliness or isolation can be like. However I only have to pick up a phone and my children and grand children are on the other end.
In spite of this I still feel moments of complete and utter loneliness when you would rather your family were there in person.
-
Loneliness
Loneliness isn鈥檛 just about being alone, loneliness is isolation brought on through no fault of the person involved.
There are so many different kinds of loneliness. Loneliness of heart and loneliness of the soul.
Loneliness of the heart can be fixed, but when it goes deeper, it鈥檚 sometimes very hard for the person to accept that fact that they鈥檙e lonely.
