Brief Description | Innovative satellite navigation for skiers |
For Sport Relief 2010 former European 400 metre champion Iwan Thomas provides support for Swiss born entrepreneur Jean-Claude Baumgartner… pitching his sat nav for outdoor sports.
It's a confident pitch and once over Iwan heads downstairs to watch what happens next with Evan Davis.Ìý
Telecoms expert Peter Jones is keen to know more. Jean-Claude demonstrates that for each different sport there's replay software so the user can track statistics on their ascents and descents track how far they've skied.Ìý
Peter continues with some hard questioning on costs and device updates but the entrepreneur remains cool and provides the responses that seem to please the Dragon.
Iwan Thomas whispers to Evan 'I think Peter likes it'.
Deborah Meaden and James Caan get down to the numbers before Theo Paphitis takes over the questioning and wants to know more about his financial forecasts.Ìý Theo is staggered to find out that the entrepreneur expects to turnover £2 million, if he can secure a good investment.Ìý James cuts to the chase and inquires how much of that will be profit.Ìý The answer; a cool £1.3 million.
James immediately offers him half the money for a 23% equity share.
The Den goes deadly quiet as the other Dragons consider their position.Ìý Downstairs, Evan comments 'silence is good'.
Peter Jones confirms Jean-Claude's motivation is financial gain rather than to run a business and initially offers the full amount but for 100% of his business.Ìý This comes with profit share, the role of a Director, and a beneficial infrastructure, but after some thought the Swiss businessman is unwilling to give away his whole company.
Peter immediately comes back with a second offer. He values Theo Paphitis' expertise in working out new markets; he will offer half the money for 25% of the business dependant on Theo putting up the rest.
Theo is more than happy to join Peter but asks for a further 25% share of the business.
Unwilling to compete with the other Dragons, Duncan Bannatyne crashes out and shows the red card.
Deborah Meaden steps up to make an offer. Understanding that Peter has more experience and contacts in this business, she sweetens her deal with half the money for only 18% of the business.
Jean-Claude has to make a choice between industry expertise versus equity.
After a brief pause the technical architect thanks Deborah and James for their offers but explains in terms of contacts in the industry, the offer Peter and Theo have on the table is more tempting.
But in a final twist a composed Jean-Claude offers Peter and Theo a counter offer, he wants to keep 52% of his business. Peter quickly offers a compromise, the full amount and 49% share for himself and Theo, the control of the business to remain with the entrepreneur.
With tension in the Den Jean-Claude quietly considers; downstairs a nervous Iwan Thomas urges the inventor to accept.
Mr Baumgartner announces… it's a deal!
