Although nervous, Leon delivers a clear pitch. Julie Meyer is the first Dragon to speak, asking how much Leon has put in to date. He explains that with £1000 he has 30,000 menus in circulation.
Julie asks what the investment is for and Leon responds that he needs a bespoke developer to design a template for all franchisees on top of £6000 to set up the franchise model.
Shaf Rasul gets straight to the money matters, asking Leon what profit he's made. Leon confidently replies that the Leeds Master Menu turned over £3500, with £2000 net profit. Overall he's made £6000 with 3 cities.
Shaf then wants to investigate Leon's franchise model. The budding entrepreneur explains that he intends to charge £5000 for a franchise, taking 20% stream of franchisee's turnover every year and in return they will get the brand, knowledge of the business and a simple-to-use design system.
Shaf isn't convinced the offer is particularly appetising for franchisees.
Julie explores Leon's business valuation and exit strategy 'Who are you going to sell it to?' Leon admits that this is one area of the business he hasn't considered, 'I don't have the answer, sorry. I haven't thought that far ahead'.
Summing up Julie tells Leon that until he knows what return he can offer an investor he doesn't need their money and that he should stick to reinvesting his profits to grow his ‘lifestyle business'. She declares herself out.
Shaf describes Leon as presentable and dynamic but tells the entrepreneur he has issues with the franchise concept. For that reason, he's also out.
