大象传媒 Radio Foyle celebrated it's 25th birthday in September 2004.Our listenership stretches across the North West of Ireland including Derry, Strabane, Limavady, Coleraine and Omagh.
Derry was of huge strategic importance during the Second World War with the western advances of The Battle of the Atlantic coordinated from Magee College in Derry. During the war there were 25,000 military personnel from all over the world stationed in Derry alone. It's said that there were so many ships along the Derry quay you could walk from one side of the river to the other across the decks of the flotillas, destroyers and friggets.
The war years transformed The North West not only because all the towns and villages were home to the military but with them came jobs galore. With the border to the Irish Free State so close smuggling became part of daily life.
Over the past few months we have been gathering stories and memories from people across the North West- from GI brides to smugglers, pilots to altar boys, shopkeepers to shirt factory girls, sailors to submariners - we have already gathered a broad number of stories from the area.
Of course we'd like more from North and South of the border in this North West area.
Our People's War producer Deirdre Donnelly has been to record stories in homes and day centres across the region and is more than happy to visit anyone with a story of the war years - whether you were at home, serving away or stationed in this area we'd like to hear your story.
If stories have been passed down through the generations we'd like to hear them too.
