Kate's love life: a very brief history

The course of love never did run smoothly for Kate. A natural rebel, Kate has never answered to anyone but herself, and her romantic partners are no exception. Humourless equine vet Jakob and fancy-free Kate may have little in common on the surface, but, call it animal magnetism, this stubborn pair seem drawn to one another. Has Kate met her match? We look back on the dating history that has led her to where she is now…

First love

After a turbulent start to secondary school, Jennifer rewarded 13-year-old Kate with a skiing holiday. It was here she met Kurt, ‘the German boyfriend’. Her long-distance phone calls to Kurt proved pretty pricey, which drove Brian up the wall and their relationship was put in jeopardy when Brian halted her pocket money until she’d paid him back.

Panic at the disco

Kate’s next relationship was cut short when, at the tender age of 14, her next boyfriend jilted her at the school disco and chose to take another girl from her class instead.

Driving me crazy

Kate’s had a fling with Warren, a boy with a penchant for fast cars. None of these cars, it transpired, belonged to him, and their relationship ended with a bump when he crashed the stolen car they were joy-riding and the police got involved.

Spiked

Kate celebrated the end of her GCSEs with Spike, who she met at Lower Loxley. They spent the summer taking excursions to Stonehenge and then on to Glastonbury.

A bad influence: John, Hayley, Roy and Kate

Tucker up

In their late teens, Kate and Roy formed an unlikely friendship, which soon turned into her first serious relationship. Initially, it seemed like a good pairing, with Kate helping Roy to move away from the violent far right crowd he had fallen in with. They spent a happy (or should that be hippy) summer running a falafel van and cruising around the countryside on their shared motorbike. Over the following two years their relationship was somewhat on-off, before becoming firmly ‘off’ in 1997. Shortly after Kate’s 20th birthday she realised she was pregnant. The next summer, in a tepee at Glastonbury, Kate gave birth to Phoebe. After taking measures to ensure Kate couldn’t abscond to France with the baby, Roy discovered through a paternity test that he was Phoebe’s father.

Marriage material

After attempting to ‘find herself’ in various corners of the world, leaving Roy to raise Phoebe, Kate surprised everyone by returning from a trip to South Africa heavily pregnant with the child of her boyfriend Lucas, a South African journalist. After much agonising, Kate and Lucas returned to South Africa with their baby, Noluthando, leaving Phoebe in the care of Roy and Hayley. That year, Kate and Lucas married. Their second baby, Sipho, arrived six years later. Both Lucas and Kate had affairs, and their marriage came to an end in 2015, leaving Kate free to return to Ambridge and make the most of her time there…

All's Fair(brother) in love and war

Kate and Toby’s interest in one another was purely physical. They caused quite a splash at Home Farm when the two were caught frolicking in Brian and Jennifer’s swimming pool, which they had filled with purple sheep dye. Their next rendezvous resulted in a hefty bill for a burst bouncy castle when they got carried away at a Brookfield party. Since then, they’ve kept one another at arms’ length.

Swede-heart

Peggy’s ferocious feline Hilda Ogden first brought Kate and Jakob together, when Kate spotted him across the waiting room of the vets. Kate was happy to find any excuse to take Hilda for a check-up with Jakob (an equine vet…) and in return managed to secure Jakob a massage appointment at Spiritual Home. It was Jakob, however, who managed to rub Kate up the wrong way, when he criticised every aspect of his appointment. He added insult to injury when he called into question the decency of Kate’s special treatments. Only time will tell whether this pair have more in common than their stubborn ways…
