Maintaining a gas platform in the North Sea
Engineer Imogen Hutchdroft travels to gas platform 47/3B, explaining her regular visits are necessary because of the harsh North Sea conditions. She checks the thickness of some newly fitted pipework so she can monitor any future corrosion which could lead to gas leaks and the threat of an explosion. She oversees the testing of the platform's fire sprinkler system – known as a deluge system. Offshore Installation Manager Les Larchet explains the importance of the platform, which is also used for gas storage for UK energy supplies. He believes renewable energy is the future but currently gas production is critical to maintain the nation's supplies.
