Maintenance of a jumbo jet

A jumbo jet has a maintenance check every 100 days to ensure it's airworthy. Aircraft Maintenance Supervisor Mel Southall leads a team as they give a British Airways 747 a thorough check-up. All civil aircraft must pass a series of regular maintenance tests laid down by aviation authorities. The first step is to download the log from the central maintenance computer which records any faults in the aircraft systems so they can be repaired or replaced. Much as on a car, the engineers also check the tyres and the oil levels. A final exhaustive test of the engines checks for leaks or any unusual vibrations. Only when it gets the all clear can the aircraft go back into service.
