Fleur Darkin

Contemporary Dance Judge

“One of the most overtly theatrical choreographers of the British new wave” (The Observer), Darkin makes award-winning original new works across dance and theatre. Her work has been seen across the UK and in Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Korea, and many European countries. Darkin’s choreography has been described as ‘powerful and disturbing’ (The Stage), ‘always inventive’ (Telegraph) and as ‘politics comes to life in the body’ (New Statesman).

Fleur was Artistic Director of Scottish Dance Theatre in 2012-2018 and is formerly Artistic Director/CEO of Darkin Ensemble and Associate Artist at Bristol Old Vic. As choreographer and director, Fleur has won/been nominated for a number of awards (Jardin D’Europe, Jerwood, Place Prize) and her most recent work Velvet Petal won the Lustrum Prize for Dance. Recent commissions include Danza Contemporánea de Cuba (Havana), Royal Court Theatre (London), Shakespeare’s Globe (London), Abbey Theatre (Dublin). Her full length-work, Miann (2014), was Linbury Trust-awarded and commissioned by Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. Her children’s work Innocence has had over 150 performances and been seen in China and Mexico, with a forthcoming tour to Chile and Peru in summer 2019. Darkin’s career includes choreographic stints at Prem (Thailand), SESC (Brazil), Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (Mexico), Adishakti (India) and Laban, Royal Opera House, The Place and The 02 (UK). Collaborations include productions with National Theatre of Scotland, Grid Iron, Stellar Quines, Dundee Rep Ensemble, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Edinburgh International Festival, and Glastonbury Festival. Fleur is currently working on the forthcoming musical Mr. Gum at National Theatre.
