From Shetland to the Scilly Isles, Open Country travels the UK in search of the stories, the people and the wildlife that make our countryside such a vibrant place. Each week we visit a new area to hear how local people are growing the crops, protecting the environment, maintaining the traditions and cooking the food that makes their corner of rural Britain unique.

Helen Mark (centre) and her party of cavers at Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, Brecon Beacons.
| |
Helen Mark climbs down Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, Britain鈥檚 deepest cave. It's in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. Ogof Ffynnon Ddu (Cave of the Black River) has over 50km of passages and is one of the longest caves in Britain.
Leading the team is experienced caver Gary Evans, who is the lead call out warden for The South Wales Cave Rescue team. He鈥檚 routinely called out to help cavers who are late returning from a trip, but from time to time he gets involved in more unusual emergencies, as when he rescued a cow that had fallen down a pothole.

Steve Thomas is keen on cave diving, one of the most extreme hobbies anyone can become involved in. He's responsible for exploring the four kilometres of underwater caves, or sumps, that can be found in Ogof Ffynnon Ddu.
Keith Ball is a geologist who has spent much of his lifetime crawling round caves for a living, and probably knows more about their formation then anybody else in the country. He's a useful person for Helen to have on hand when she stumbles across a chamber full of unusual-looking rock formations.
Julian Carter is a zoologist who works for the National Galleries and Museums of Wales. He explains to Helen that more life can be found in caves then you might imagine, despite the absence of light.
The final member making up this intrepid crew is Londoner Peter Cardey, who made many breakthroughs in the exploration of Ogof Ffynnon Ddu in the 1960s. He鈥檚 caved all over the world and talks passionately about the weird and wonderful atmospheres that caves possess.
