Episode 1. Monday 12 September, 2005, 15.45-16.00
Rats are found all over Britain, for example, on farms, in rubbish dumps, gardens and in sewers.听 A sewer is near paradise for a rat; cool in summer, warm in winter and a constant humidity, with food and water in plenty supply.
The series opens on Tyneside. It's late December, and shortly after midnight when a young, immature brown sewer rat, emerges from her burrow in the underground sewer and follows her familiar run through the city in search of food.听 A group of drunken youths see the rat feeding and chase her through the streets, following her into the path of a speeding car.
Meanwhile, on Merseyside, a female rat has a narrow escape when the Mersey Ferry surges past her whilst she's swimming in the harbour. Without their mother to care for them, her litter of young rats nesting in a hollow high in the harbour wall would certainly perish.
