Recipe for Pancake Day

Pancakes

What is Pancake Day?

Pancake Day, which is also called Shrove Tuesday, is a festival when we eat pancakes. It started hundreds of years ago, from the need to eat up milk, butter and eggs before the 40 day religious fast which happens traditionally before Easter (a festival celebrating the beginning of Christianity). For most people today, it's not a religious festival, and people just enjoy eating lots of pancakes and having fun.

Making Pancakes

Pancakes are very easy to make and the ingredients are very basic. Why don't you try with our special 大象传媒 Learning English recipe? You can add whatever filling you like. The traditional filling is sugar and lemon. Other sweet fillings include: chocolate spread, fruit, jam; you can also use savoury fillings.

Ingredients

150g flour
300ml milk
2 tablespoons oil
2 eggs
a pinch of salt

Making the pancake

Sieve the flour into a bowl. Crack two eggs into the flour. Be careful not to get any eggshell in the flour!

Instructions

1. Sieve the flour into a bowl. Crack two eggs into the flour. Be careful not to get any eggshell in the flour!
2. Whisk the eggs and flour together. Then slowly add the milk to the mixture and whisk hard. Add two tablespoons of oil to the mixture and whisk. When the mixture is smooth and runny, you are ready to cook your pancakes!
3. Heat a little oil in a frying pan. When the oil is hot, add one ladle of mixture to the pan. Swirl the mixture around the pan to make a pancake. Leave it to cook for a few minutes on one side.
4. Flip the pancake with a spatula and cook the other side. When both sides are browned, your pancake is ready and you can serve it on a plate.

The best part... roll up your pancake and eat it. Yum!
