A tour of Kelso in the Scottish Borders

Description

A look at the history and landmarks of Kelso in the Scottish Borders. A graphic map plots the position of Kelso, where the River Teviot meets the River Tweed. Kelso was founded 900 years ago with the establishment of the abbey. The monks who lived there were responsible for building up the town and creating the first mill. As Kelso grew bigger, it became an important market town and the market continues to this day.

Classroom Ideas

Students could study other important towns in the Southern Uplands and compare these with Kelso. Why are towns sometimes established close to rivers? Students could brainstorm ideas and look for examples.
