A plea for Scottish Night...
We are out the door with suggestions tonight. No surprise that Scottish night is the most popular one in our four nations theme. Here's a great e-mail that came in from Martin Donnely...
"Dear Brian,
I have tried many times to get a song played on your show, but NOTHING EVER HAPPENS. I can understand that IF I WAS living IN A BIG COUNTRY this would not be aMISS - AMERICA, or somewhere like that. But living in little old CALEDONIA, surely there is a CHANCE of getting at least one song played? I even sit at home and join in with your soup discussions - every night my better half KAYLEIGH brings a bowl of soup and a ROLL TO ME. It's a little BAKER'S TREAT that I like to enjoy. She's promised to TAKE ME OUT for a meal if I get a tune played - she's even bought NEW SHOES for the occasion. I thought that I had a list that would guarantee me a request, but I had to RIP IT UP when I realised neither Morrissey or Billy Bragg were Scottish (even if they do both sound like the Rev. I.M. Jolly on Mogadon).
I gaze out of my window overlooking LOCH LOMOND for inspiration. I look along the WATERFRONT and INTO THE VALLEY beyond, the landscape illuminated by THE WHOLE OF THE MOON. I could ask for the theme from 'Taggart', but you played that recently, so MAGGIE MAY not get another airing so soon. I've been mulling this over from 9 TO 5, and it looks like I'M GONNA BE struggling to find a song you'll definitely play. A LITTLE BIRD tells me that I should request some Bay City Rollers as they carry some kitsch value, but I like to think I'm still YOUNG AT HEART and I'd like to maintain a modicum of DIGNITY.
Just one song is all it would and then I COULD BE HAPPY, but it would seem that the secret of hearing a request on the show will remain a SWEET LITTLE MYSTERY to me. I the meantime I will SING along with someone else's choices, trying to think of the PERFECT choice while I wait for this piece of WRITING TO REACH YOU. In the meantime, it's goodnight VIENNA!"
