Octogenarian body builder Charles Eugster sets down his dumbbells to tell us his philosophy of life.

87 year old Charles took up bodybuilding last year and has seen his performance increase dramatically! Also, he is so excited by the benefits of doing heavy exercise in old age that he wants to pass on the message to others

He picked up Gold Medals this year in both the World and European Masters Rowing Regattas in Princeton USA and Munich respectively and he is considering a world record attempt rowing 2000m on the Ergometer next Spring.

I can confirm the benefits of strenuous activity in 'senior' years. I am 70 and for the last two years have been cycling and swimming regularly to help recover from prostate cancer. It has been my experience that if you just want to fill time then doing activities like this gently does just that and keeps the joints mobile; however, if you want to feel good and look good you have to work hard. Our bodies are adaptive mechanisms and with appropriate nutrition and rest will adapt to new challenges. My advice is to get out of the armchair and go for it. As Charles Eugster says "use it or lose it".
