Garry Richardson
Garry Richardson has been presenting the sport on Radio 4's Today programme since 1980. The track he inherited from his parents was from the 1955 film The Court Jester starring Danny Kaye. He would like to pass on 'Solace' from the film The Sting.
Danny Kaye & The Court Jester - my all time favourite - and that of my 4 grown up kids.
Not many people know that all his songs & material (at least in that film) were written by his lifetime WIFE, Sylvia Fine" Always admired and inspired by her wit & verbal originality and ymnastics dexteriay. Always unexpected linkings of words - not a cliche in a cartload of words. Why not do a piece on SYLVIA FINE???
Complain about this postI'll be listening. BETH TURNER
Solace (A mexican Serenade) does if I'm not careful reduce me to tears. My brother introduced me to it and learned to play it on the piano quite well. I have just bought it played by Richard Zimmerman but I agree with Gary that Marvin Hamlisch get's it just about right. Where can I buy this recording? I can't find it anywhere. Dont tell me I've got to buy the film!

Complain about this postI found Garry Richardson's story about "Solace" remarkably unconvincing .
Yes it appears on the Sting soundtrack , but it is credited on both movie and the relevant album as by Scott Joplin and with the title "Solace". It also appeared at the same time on most (if not all) Scott Joplin compilation LP's (I still have one in my attic).
Why , then , did he keep going in to shops and asking for it the wrong way ? I am pretty sure that if he had written to - say - one of the major London music publishers and asked for it by the correct title they would have been able to supply it by return .
Complain about this postExcellent. Made me download the 2 tracks to my IPOD!
Complain about this postWe have a number of Danny Kaye songs on vinyl children's albums but not this one. As for Solace - marvellous.
Finally caught up with this site - I agree re Danny Kaye and his talented wife's writings - the one I would have chosen is similarly clever and is called "Lobby Number" from the album "Danny at the Palace" (New York's famous Palace Theatre) - I regularly entertain my husband with it - another terribly complicated and amusing story/song about a film that "ends in the middle for the benefit of those who came in in the middle" with the heroine, MarySueAnn, who was adopted by Sir Basil Metabolism, who turns out to be a "dangerous German spy" - etc etc. Never mind leaving this for your kids to inherit - if I could take it with me, I would!
Complain about this postThis was a great item with a good choice of music. Mr Ruddle should clean out his ears Gary was asking for the music not the Cd. Of course it was not unconvincing. Well done Gary on playing the Piano and telling us a nice story.
