There was a dramatic finish to the West Ham v Tottenham game on Sunday, when Tottenham’s Paul Stalteri scored an injury-time winner 伤时赛决胜球 to snatch 夺取了the victory away from West Ham. The Hammers (West Ham) led 2-0 and then 3-2 but ended up losing 4-3 in a cruel end to the game.
West Ham boss Alan Curbishly blamed his team for being "naive" 天真的. He means that the team have a lack of knowledge and good judgement. He said they did not know how "to see a game out" 善始善终;坚持到底, in other words: how to complete the game.
The Hammers are now at the bottom of the Premiership table and have only won one in 12 games since Curbishly took over 接管 in December. He said they hadn’t managed to get a "lift-off" 起步;开端”. He means in this context that they haven’t been able to make a good start. The phrase 'lift-off' is normally used to describe an aircraft rising into the air.
The team now face relegation 降级 but Curbishly still hopes that their luck will improve and they will begin to win. He says they won’t "give up" 放弃 or stop trying and they must "keep going" 坚持下去 or make an effort to continue even though they are in a difficult position.
