I can't remember when it was canceled but I'm sure MTV was the killerÌý 2006 and nonsense to the MTV reason.

Singles chart music had long lost its broad appeal so there wasn't anything but a core audience who wanted to watch Top of the Pops anymore - and you're not telling me that fans of a particular act wouldn't like to see them 'live' in a studio rather than in the same repeated video.

    Hiya meet the wife!

It's apt that you should be the curator of this thread; and, as you know, I will join in, so I will.

    BTW:
Yep, I had a wonderful time in my Motherland, Argentina - ta for asking!

Also on another thread, you picked up on my reference to an encounter with the great Gil Scott-Heron...
I've told this story so many times on the old R2 Boards so I hope you don't mind me saying that the gist of it is -

A Notting Hill Gate hotel, and whaccy-baccy, and a nice time was had by all...

Gil was in his musical prime in the early 80s; but. alas, you won't see him on TOTP.

So all being well, TOTP 1980 proper bo should start the following Thursday, January 8th.

Looking ahead, there are only three episodes in the first five months of 1980 tainted by the two personae non grata - the first of those not until March. Then most of the summer months were TOTP-free because of (perfectly valid?) industrial action.

Joe Jackson, Dexy's, the Lambrettas, the Vapors, Siouxsie, Martha&Muffins, Ramones... on reflection, I think I might like 1980 even more than 79.

Apart from some great Disco and Funk, I was buying post-punk stuff that rarely troubled the charts...

Joy Division, Magazine, PIL, Gang Of Four, Scritti Politti, The Slits, The Pop Group, Cabaret Voltaire...

Yep, it was a good era for Bowie; and my old mucker, Elvis Costello, was doing great stuff.

I'm looking forward to 1980, so to speak, and the summer break for the Proms neatly coincides with TOTP's enforced suspension due to the 1980 Musicians' Union strike.

However, I'm intrigued by this entry on the Popscene site...

9-7-80: Presenters: Peter Powell & B.A. Robertson (TOTP Pilot)

    (14) SAXON – 747 (Strangers In The Night)
    (2) ODYSSEY – Use It Up And Wear It Out (danced to by Legs & Co)
    (11) PAUL McCARTNEY – Waterfalls (video)
    (21) THIN LIZZY – Chinatown
    (22) LEO SAYER – More Than I Can Say
    (16) KATE BUSH – Babooshka (video)
    (24) DARTS – Let’s Hang On (video)
    (10) SPLODGENESSABOUNDS – Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps Please (still picture)
    (9) BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS – Could You Be Loved (live clip)
    (8) THE KORGIS – Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime (video)
    (7) UB40 – My Way Of Thinking (sound dubbed over clip of TOTP 17-4-80)
    (6) LIPPS INC – Funky Town (still picture)
    (5) THE DETROIT SPINNERS – Cupid (live clip)
    (4) DON McLEAN – Crying (video)
    (3) STACY LATTISAW – Jump To The Beat (still picture)
    (2) ODYSSEY – Use It Up And Wear It Out (still picture)
    (1) OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN & ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA – Xanadu (still picture)
    (29) CHANGE – A Lover’s Holiday (and credits)
    >> During the Musician’s Union strike, TOTP piloted the new-look show during July
1980 - members of the production team stood in for the studio acts.

Although the 'stand ins' presumably only stood in for Saxon, Thin Lizzy and Leo Sayer, it must have looked very odd! Does anyone remember this "pilot" episode?

    "Brass In Pocket"

I really wasn't trying to detract from your black horn-rimmed glasses and beret, cool jazz noir image May... but you always seem pretty cheerful to me,
    so you do!smiley - winkeye

I'm pleasantly surprised that our "commercial" 1980 Top Five match pretty well!!

This notion that I'm cheery and bright and breezy is troubling my already troubled Soul...

From now on, I will always wear my beret when I post; the black horn-rims are always in place anyway and not negotiable for medical reasons!

But perhaps then I will be true to my moody, awkward Existential self...

A la Nanette Newman in Tony Hancock's "The Rebel" -
"Why kill time when you can kill yourself?"

    I haven't mentioned the black polo-neck sweater but I assume that's a given.

(I'd also like to replace the Silk Cut that is always sticking out of my gob with a Gauloise - but you can't get 'em in Dublin!)

    PS:
Joe Jackson's "It's Different For Girls" makes the cut.
    That's a good song!

Funny, I very nearly threw in a made up reference to a 40-Gitanes-a-day habit just for effect... but it was Gauloise?!

Joe Jackson's It's Different... might just be my fave of 1980 now you mention it. I know it's hopeless me trying to tempt you with Macca's Coming Up, but how about Kate's Army Dreamers?

I'm looking to a bit of Thotch. As we all know, the band were riding the crest of a wave in 1980.

But wouldn't Thotch have been at their creative peak in the mid-70s?
Have you seen their great record sleeves on their iPlayer page?

Yep, mtw, I like those Kate and Macca tracks well enough; but I wouldn't say they were highlights of either's "oeuvre".
(Blimey, I'm getting very French this weekend!)

Alas, "Army Dreamers" has one of those cheap, naff videos she had to do before she could afford Donald Sutherland!

As it's just been given the deluxe reissue treatment, I've been listening to my original vinyl copy of "Venus And Mars".
It was one of the first LPs I ever bought - and stands up pretty well.
Probably not as strong as the one before, "Band On The Run"; but, oddly, I've never owned that one, or heard it all the way through.

    Au revoir!

French Connection II... I happened to be in Paris in August 1975, and for my 15th birthday treated myself to the 'Venus and Mars' Lp, bought at Lido Musique, 68 Avenue des Champs-Elysees... and I still have the plastic bag!

I know what you mean about the Army Dreamers video... but all I ever see are her beautiful eyes!
