Throughout the war- and for some time afterwards- my mother battled patiently with rationing and food shortages and always managed to keep us as well fed as possible. It was a great, unsung effort that she and the country鈥檚 housewives made. My parents鈥 generation had suffered the horrors of the 1st World War 鈥 my father fought in the trenches- and they all had the anxieties of seeing their sons, and often their daughters, go off to other unknown conflicts, while at the same time keeping the country going.
