In May the Nazis turned their fury on Liverpool and for seven days and nights we watched from our side of the river as the city burned. One night Lewis鈥檚 store was hit and their big bedding department shed its contents of feathers all over the centre of Liverpool 鈥 they fell like snow! It was said that another night of blitz would have finished the city as all the auxiliary services and the army were exhausted.

This story was collected by Lis Edwards and was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Becky Barugh of the 大象传媒 Radio Shropshire CSV Action Desk on behalf of Mrs Margaret James. The story has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
