On V.E day the news came through on one of the evenings we were at the W.V.S canteen and bedlam broke out all around us. I remember riding round Hamilton Square on the running board of a taxi (they had running-boards in those days!) and then we all rushed down to the pier head and found a ferry-boat from where we saw the lights going on again after nearly six years of blackout, lighting up the famous Liver birds and the Cunard and Customs House buildings. It was a great moment.
