The House of Tiny Tearaways

Family Six: Eating

Paula (33), Steve (33), Jacob (four) and Isaac (two years and six months) from East Sussex

Jacob and Isaac have different eating problems.

Isaac won't eat proper food except ice cream cones and crisps: any other food has to be pureed and he will gag if fed lumpy food.

If Paula tries to feed brother Jacob, Isaac will immediately fight for attention.

Older brother Jacob isn't interested in food at all; Paula is the only person who can feed him. She spoon feeds him at every meal, which means he will never eat school dinners or packed lunches.

Paula and Steve are partners and have been together for six years. Paula is a full-time mother and Steve works as a security guard.

Because of his working hours, he does not get to see the boys much during the week.

Paula feels that Steve is insensitive to the desperation she feels over the boys' eating problems; he is certainly unaware of the effect on Paula's life.

The feeding issues with the boys have come to rule her life and she dreads mealtimes because she knows how frustrating it will be. She's finding it increasingly difficult to keep her temper and feels isolated in dealing with the problem.
