Best known as a 400m runner, Iwan is a former European and Commonwealth champion and remains the British record holder in the 400m. Although Iwan modestly describes himself on his Twitter page as someone who: ‘used to run around in a circle and now pops up on the tele’, he is no stranger to medals - Iwan was awarded an MBE in the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to Athletics.

Iwan was born on January 5, 1974 in Farnborough in the London Borough of Bromley, and attended schools in Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. Talented in sport from an early age, Iwan began competitive BMX racing from the age of nine and won over 400 trophies in seven years.

Iwan started taking athletics seriously aged 18 and made the British team for the World Junior Championships in Seoul, helping them to fifth in the 4x400m relay. While studying for a degree in Sports Studies and Leisure Management, he got into top-level athletics when he joined Newham and Essex Beagles. He was introduced to Roger Black’s coach Mike Smith who soon became his mentor.

Iwan enjoyed an illustrious athletics career with highlights that include an Olympic silver medal in the 4x400m relay in 1996, a World Championship gold in the 4x400m relay in 1997, two gold European Championships medals in Budapest in the 400m and the 4x400m relay and a Commonwealth Games Gold in Kuala Lumpur where he won 400m along with a bronze medal for Wales in the 4x400m relay. Iwan was also awarded Wales Sports Personality of the Year in 1998.

Iwan has become a television personality since hanging up his spikes. From initial appearances as a health and fitness expert for and presenter on Channel 4’s Sunday morning sport programme Destination 2012, Iwan has appeared on a range of shows and as a pundit at sporting events.

Iwan’s notable TV appearances include being a finalist on Celebrity Masterchef, braving the obstacles on , quizzing on , , , and performing on Stars In Their Eyes as Chris Martin!
