Wales: Gary Griffiths

Baritone - born 1983

Gary Griffiths grew up in Pembrey, south west Wales and studied opera at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where he won the prestigious Gold Medal Competition in 2009. In 2012 he was the winner of the Welsh Singers Competition.

Gary is a former Associate Artist of Welsh National Opera where roles included Guglielmo Così fan tutte, Schaunard La bohème, Claudio Beatrice and Benedict and Masetto Don Giovanni. Other roles include Belcore L’elisir d’amore and Germano La scala di seta for British Youth Opera, Dog and Innkeeper The Cunning Little Vixen for Grange Park Opera and Count Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro, Dr Malatesta Don Pasquale and Mr Gedge Albert Herring for the Guildhall School Opera. Recent concert appearances include Mozart Requiem with WNO/ Christoph Poppen at St David’s Hall and recital appearances include King’s Place with Iain Burnside, Wigmore Hall with Malcolm Martineau and Thomas Allen and the Cowbridge Music Festival with Joseph Middleton.

Gary is very grateful for the generous support of the Welsh Livery Guild, Mrs June Rees MBE and Mr Chris Ball. Future engagements include Messiah at the Royal Festival Hall and Cecil Maria Stuarda at Welsh National Opera.

Gary enjoys cycling and swimming.

Es ist genug (Elijah) – Mendelssohn

Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah was first performed in Birmingham in 1846. Elijah, at the end of his life, desires to live no longer and asks to be allowed to die, for his days are but vanity.

Ô vin, dissipe la tristesse (Hamlet) - Thomas

Hamlet has invited a troupe of strolling players to perform a play at court and invites them to drink with him. The wine should dissolve all sadness and bring forgetfulness, he says. Life is short and everyone has their troubles to bear. He bids the dark omens of despair to be dispelled.
