Argentina: Daniela Mack

Mezzo-soprano - born 1982

Daniela Mack was born in Buenos Aires and studied at Louisiana State University. She studies now with Cesar Ulloa. In the 2012/2013 season, Daniela Mack made her debut at the English National Opera as Sesto Julius Caesar. Other debuts include Nancy Albert Herring at Th茅芒tre du Capitole in Toulouse and Madrigal Singer Manon Lescaut at Washington National Opera.This year she debuts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Falla鈥檚 La vida breve under Rafael Fr眉hbeck de Burgos and at the Cincinnati Festival in Mozart鈥檚 Requiem under James Conlon.

Recent engagements include Nancy Albert Herring under James Conlon at Los Angeles Opera, Isabella 尝鈥橧迟补濒颈补苍补 in Algeri at Op茅ra National de Bordeaux and Florentine Opera, Angelina La Cenerentola at Opera Colorado and Madison Opera, Rosina Il barbiere di Siviglia at Pittsburgh Opera, Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro at the Verbier Festival and at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Idamante Idomeneo at San Francisco Opera and Tamiri Il re pastore at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Recent concert performances included Handel鈥檚 Messiah with the Calgary and Edmonton Philharmonics and Ravel鈥檚 厂丑茅丑茅谤补锄补诲别 with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Future engagements include Rosina Il barbiere di Siviglia for San Francisco Opera in November.

O霉 suis-je?鈥 ma lyre immortelle (Sapho) Gounod

Sapho was 铿乺st performed in 1851, and this is the best-known aria in the work. The poet Sapho has won a competition on Mount Olympus for poetic recitation. She returns to Lesbos, where her lover Phaon betrays her. Sapho sings these 铿乶al verses to her lyre, bidding it farewell before she throws herself to her death in the sea.

Ah qual gelido orror鈥l padre adorato (Idomeneo) Mozart

Idomeneo, King of Crete, has vowed to the god Neptune that he will sacrifice the first living creature he meets if only Neptune would save him from perishing at sea. He sees Idamante, and, realising he is his long-lost son, orders that he must never speak to him again. Not knowing that Idomeneo is trying to get out of his vow and devastated by this rejection, Idamante sings of the pain inflicted by his beloved father.

Cinderella sums up the events of the fairy-tale and tells how she has won good fortune. She tells her family to dry their disappointed tears, and share in her happiness with her new-found prince. In the cabaletta she declares that she will no longer sit sadly beside the hearth.

Isabella is an Italian woman who has been captured with her companions by Mustafa, the Bey of Algiers, who wants to marry her. Isabella agrees on condition that he will join her 鈥楶appataci鈥, men who agree to let women do as they please. She urges the other Italians on with patriotic fervour in this bravura aria.

Verdi prati (Alcina) 鈥 Handel

The hero Ruggiero is on an enchanted island, pursued by the sorceress, Alcina. After a lot of magical transformations, with the wrong people falling in love, Ruggiero is given a magic ring which shows the island in its true light. The beautiful green meadows, leafy woods and babbling brooks will soon be transformed into a bleak desert. He realizes that his obsession with Alcina, as well as the beautiful surroundings, are mere illusion.

Qu'entends-je?鈥mour, viens rendre 脿 mon 芒me (Orph茅e et Eurydice) 鈥 Gluck

Orpheus has lost Eurydice, who has descended into Hades. He determines to go there and rescue her, and calls on Love to strengthen his soul.
