Portugal: Susana Gaspar

Soprano - born 1981

Susana Gaspar studied at the Lisbon Music Conservatory, the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and at the National Opera Studio. She currently studies with Susan Waters. Awards include a scholarship from the Royal Opera House, the British Youth Opera Basil Turner prize and first prize, Lieder and Portuguese Song prize in the Rotary Club Singing Competition. She has received support from the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers, Derek Butler Trust, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Vasconcellos Award.

Roles include Vi Blue Monday (Gershwin) and Lauretta Gianni Schicchi at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and title role The Little Prince at Teatro da Trinidade. Susana has also performed in recitals across the world.

She joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme in 2011 and made her Royal Opera debut as Barbarina Le nozze di Figaro. She has covered Susanna Le nozze di Figaro, Gilda Rigoletto and Corinna Il viaggio a Reims. In the 2012/13 ROH season, she sings Giannetta L’elisir d’amore, First Innocent Minotaur, Papagena Die Zauberflöte and Voice from Heaven Don Carlo, and covers Waldvogel Siegfried, Adina L’elisir d’amore and Mimì La bohème.

Future engagements include Mahler’s Rückert Lieder with Orquestra 21 in Porto and Lisbon.

Susana enjoys reading and spending time with her pets.

Giulietta loves Romeo, but is being forced to marry Tebaldo. In her beautiful wedding dress, she feels like a sacrificial victim ready to be led to the altar, and would prefer to be sacrificed than married to a man she does not love. She longs for Romeo to come to her aid.

Azaël! Azaël! (L'enfant prodigue) – Debussy

Lia laments the loss of her son, Azaël, in this concert piece based on the Biblical parable 'The Prodigal Son' with which Debussy won the Prix de Rome in 1884, aged 22. With each passing year since her son's departure, Lia's sadness increases. She remembers the good times they had together, and still she does not understand why he has gone.

Qual fiamma avea nel guardo!… Stridono lassù (Pagliacci) - Leoncavallo

Nedda, married to Tonio, the leader of a troupe of strolling players, dreams of flying as free as a bird, following the migrating flocks as they wander through the air like gypsies, towards a strange country they search for in vain.
