David Barby
23 April 1943 – 25 July 2012
David died in hospital in Coventry following a short illness with his family at his bedside.
We all remember David with great fondness.
David was the expert on the very first episode of Flog It! in January 2002 and a stalwart of the show ever since. His sense of fun, gentle personality, and great knowledge of and passion for antiques, endeared him to the hundreds of people he worked with and millions of viewers at home.
David's first job in the antique trade was as an 'Article Pupil' at an estate auction when he was just 18. His interest in collecting started with items like fossils, long before he started working in the business.
His experiences drawing up inventories for stately homes, farms, and houses while working as an estate manager developed his interest in furniture and antiques. He later moved to London, where he cut his teeth as an auctioneer and valuer, qualifying as a member of what is now the aged just 21.
David operated and managed a fine art saleroom in Leamington Spa for twenty-five years, later specialising as a freelance valuer.
David was an ambassador for antiques TV and loved every minute spent making the many, many episodes of , , , and more. We all remember David with great fondness.
