As soon as I found out where my telescope had gone to I took steps to recover It.

I'd like this for my neighbourhood watch duties if it turns up. It's perfect for checking up on Agnes Ann Morrison.

Better still, send it to me prepaid. I promise to oil it. ... and I'll never send it back for repairs (promise!).

Experience tells me not to ask, but cat's are curious creatures, so, what sort of badnesses does Agnes Ann Morrison get up to that she needs watching?

More to the point is the surveillance of Agnes Anne for crime prevntion or entertainment purposes?

I want to make it absolutely, perfectly clear that I am asking for the gizmo - NOT Agnes Ann Morrison, Lady of the Garter - to be sent to me postpaid. I have my hands full, already, thank you very much.

You were quite right to make that clear mjc, these Morrison women are all more than two handsful. At least the ones I know......... Are you working with the British Standard Handful or the American one? It's like cups, you really need to know.

No comment. I don't want to over-burden Anne of IBHQ. She has her hands full already squashing comments (including, I fear, two of mine, where I voiced [on re: Positive Thinking] my incredulity at the intemperance of the bloggers/residents of that island) deemed non constructive on the ballyhoo on Coll.

Don't worry mjc, you're in good company. (That's mine, in case you don't recognise the description!)Dratted f***s! Ribit. Ribit..........

After being reinstated in 2002 after over 10 years of neglect, the owner of the telescopes was tracked down (in England) and was prevailed upon to reinstate the two telescopes (one on the Esplanade, the other on Ardbeg Point 2 miles north of Rothesay). They were completely overhauled and re-painted. However they were removed last year by the owner, for reasons not disclosed - possibly the cost of upkeep and of travelling to Bute to empty the cash recepticle inside the housing. Personally I think this is a shame because I agree with you that these 'remnants' of the age when seaside towns like Rothesay were invaded by hosts of holiday makers who found these features fascinating. But Rothesay (and Bute generally) now has many more exciting attractions which fully merit a visit - tourists will never regret a visit to the Isle of Bute. The following website provides a unique glimpse of what life is like on Bute: www.bute-gateway.org Make Bute you next holiday destination!

I want my 10p back.

It might sound sad but walking along the esplanade with my Dad and getting 10p to look through the Telescopes is one childhood memory that stays with me . Rothesay and Bute is deep in my soul the best wee Island in the "Best wee Country"
