Tar Sands Sue Nelson presents the third in a series of discussions about the science behind the news.
Tar sands The Alberta region of Canada contains oil reserves to rival those of Saudi Arabia! The trouble is, they are not reserves of sweet, light crude oil that just needs pumping to the surface. They are a nasty mixture of oil, sand and tar covering two and a half thousand square kilometres, on the forested surface and underground. Sue Nelson hears about the latest techniques for extracting the oil and about their environmental costs and consequences. First broadcast 4th November 2008 |
