CERN The Large Hadron Collider, the fastest particle collider ever built, was switched on at CERN in Geneva on Wednesday 10th September 2008.
Physics Rocks Professor Brian Cox talks to CERN fan and particle enthusiast Alan Alda, better known as actor and star of 70's TV sitcom MASH, & Brian Green, theoretical physicist and author, about their enthusiasm for this extraordinary endeavour. First broadcast 9th September 2008 Two of the Fundamental Particles of Our Universe: Electon and Quark Simon Singh uncovers the quest to understand some of the fundamental particles that make up the universe we live in. He begins with the small charged particle we?ve come to know as the electron, and the elusive quark which, thanks to inspiration by the writer James Joyce, rapidly caught on as a term for nearly all visible matter. First broadcast 16th September 2008 Two more of the Fundamental Particles of Our Universe: Anti-matter and Sparticles Simon Singh continues his look at the stories behind the discovery of the universe?s most significant subatomic particles. He considers the mirror world of antimatter and wonders what is the next particle that scientists hope to find, that could unify all the grand theories of physics.
