Life's Soundtrack

Sound is vital to our evolutionary success as a social species, perhaps more so than any other animal on the planet.

In these two programmes Trevor Cox, broadcaster and Professor of Acoustics at Salford University in the north of England, explores how the sounds we make and the sounds we hear change during our lifetime.

Programme 1 - Voice

How does a baby learn to use its voice?

Why does the voice change so dramatically during puberty?

What's the secret of an attractive voice and why do men and women begin to sound the same in old age?

Programme 2 - Hearing

We have a chance to hear what it sounds like in the womb.

Trevor Cox asks the question at what point does our hearing start to decline? What causes age related hearing loss and can it be reversed?

First broadcast August 2008
