Saturday Live

spooky buildings....

Greetings people - hope all is well in your world. You join me on a packed Thursday in our new offices at Broadcasting House (see earlier blogs from Maria and Torquil). You might be interested to know a small fact about how your licence fee has been spent ...

... the blinds here are set to automatic and come up and down at very weird times during the day. I shall keep you posted as to exactly when - they are up at the moment but I seem to recall that somewhere around 11.45 they come down again.

If anyone can offer me an explanation as to why this might happen then I would be very grateful.

And I know that some of you have sent emails to the programme complaining that it is some kind of celeb-fest. I would be interested to know the difference between a celebrity and someone who has done something interesting with their lives and has therefore attracted some kind of attention to themselves but still has relevant points to make about life.

I know that I sound churlish in making this distinction but I would be interested in your responses.

Genuinely.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Fi, that's quite interesting, because I am one floor above you, and our blinds seem to go UP at 11.38-ish each morning.

Sorry I can't offer advice on the latter point.

    Fi,

So why aren't these whingers on the blog? If you can't take it, don't give it, I say. Your show doesn't register unduly on my freeloader-meter, which is particularly sensitive at this Jungle time of year.

As to the distinction you draw, I'd go further: "celebrity" and "relevant/interesting" have become mutually exclusive terms. (Hence, a 'shallow' of celebrities.) Of course I'd be prepared to ditch my principles for sufficient appearance money.

On the question of blinds, perhaps they are on a siesta setting? They sound a little like my eyelids. I'll nap in sympathy at 11.38 or so. Why not give it a try?

Sadly I think the truth is that anyone who has appeared in even their local paper is nowadays regarded as a 'celebrity'.

I'm also slightly worried that, 'Being a Celebrity' will soon appear as a GCSE module.

So please, Saturday Live, pick up the mantle and single-handledly reinforce the distinction between 'celebrity' and interesting and worthwhile. In fact I can't think of one guest you've had who could be described as a celeb and very grateful for that I am too.

Can't remember the blinds working when I was runner (back in August/ September- Sat in on your Pilot programme!). Well not automatically anyway.

Not sure there is any difference in the celebrity/ interesting person definitions apart from celebrity also accounts for various people who are famous for nothing in particular than being famous

We have spooky buildings in America. In Ohio, there is a house in Wadsworth where the person enters the house but cannot return. There are also rumors of a haunted floor in the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gbales Florida.
