18 November: Christmas Lights

The Christmas lights on Regent Street looked very pretty this morning on the way in, have a look for yourself . They do however signal that it's time to trek around the shops buying Christmas presents, something I dread about this time of year.

Before you start accusing me of being an old scrooge bear in mind that I come from a big Irish family. This year, one of my sisters has come up with the novel idea of each of us having to buy just one present for just one other person and she's going to pick the names out of a hat. I'm hoping I get my Dad as he's very easily pleased, in fact every year since goodness knows when, I have simply wrapped up one of his existing ties and given it to him as a pressie and he has never known any different. So, fingers crossed.

Thanks to everyone on today's show. Philip Harris was our guerilla reporter informing us about what druids get up to at this time of the year, so now we know. Female football referee Karen Williams told us how she keeps 22 men under control every weekend. Bernadette Cook described how her husband Bernard simply disappeared around this time last year but she hasn't lost hope of finding him. Cerys Bannister revealed her philosphy of life and Adam Hart-Davis sang along to his inheritance tracks. Tartan clad Elvis McGonagall regaled us with his poetry and Shyama Perera provided the chat.

Remember to get in touch here if you too want to be on the show.

As always you can listen again to this edition of Saturday Live (18 November 2006)

Why on earth were you giving so much air space to all this tosh about so-called Druids. There is no evidence whatever Druids had anything to do with all these mysterious stone circles and so on. If your " Druids" wanted to celebrate something they should have gone up to Anglesey where the last Druids remaining in Britain were slaughtered by the Romans. Druidic nonsense was revived in the 16th century as a sort of toffs' boozing society; some wealthier ones even pulled up these stones to put on their own estates and prance around them. They were the Bertie Woosters of their day. Winston Churchill went in for this nonsense as a young man, wearing false beards and robes etc., but the idea that today's "druids" have any basis in history is total bunk. That someone in NHS should go in for this is rather alarming and may explain a lot.

If you hate the idea of the trek of the Christmas shops why do you not look at www.wheredoi.co.uk where you can see online videos of British Artists and Designers and buy their products all gift wrapped?
