Saturday Live

Lunch Based Disaster

What was I thinking? (Always start with a question... that's what Mrs Higgins my old English teacher once said to me and did I not always do so?). Lunch-wise, what was I thinking? Here I am, terribly excited about presenting the show on Saturday. The show I am led to believe is "live". I don't normally work this far north of Soho. Soho is full of luncheon opportunites... Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, that one place nobody's quite sure of...

But up here, in the deco shadow of Broadcasting House the choices are altogether more challenging. I found myself in a soup/sandwich shop, a pocketful of money, a headful of dreams, a stomach full of hunger... after much perusal, much heated internal debate I opted for the cheese and pickle sandwich. I like cheese; I like pickle; I like what happens to them when they find themselves sandwiched between two deliciously buttered slices of granary bread. So, sandwich in hand I am counter-bound when I smell and then see soup being offered for sale. The sandwich/soup combo dances through my mind...shall I? can I?

There's a veggie offering (I'm from Glasgow, food without meat is solely designed to accompnay meat itself) I eschew the meatless soup... I embrace the meaty offering... a laksa... a chicken and noodle laksa... yum... but what's this?... They have pies on offer behind the counter. No-one mentioned pies. I was not aware pies were on the agenda, let alone the menu. what am I to do? A steak and kidney pie is my manna from a party giving heaven.... sandwich, soup and pie is too much, even for a boy my size. I have to ditch one of the triumvirate... it's like that logic test... the fox, the chicken and the bag of seed... there were two possible and acceptable outcomes:
1) sandwich and soup
2) pie and sandwich
there is one further and wholly unacceptable outcome:
3) pie and soup or soup and pie
I panic. I do. There's no hiding it.
I opt for three. Steak and kidney pie and a Malaysian chicken noodle coconutty laksa and I sat and ate them simultaneously... as if to rub Maldon Sea Salt into the cuisinal protocol wound... now i'm burping coconut and steak burps...and I have a show to present in nineteen hours...

What was I thinking? Tell me you've not done the same...

Hardeep

Love Hardeep Singh Kohli and the blog.

His style and voice is perfect as a presenter and he should replace Fi Glover whose fast delivry is mainly unintellible to us. If she continues as presenter of Saturday Live, there will be a switch-off despite the interesting content of the show.

Please Hardeep, speak to your Agent and try and get permanent job presenting Saturday Live once Fi Glover's contract expires - or even before. Always assuming you'd like to.

I'm always in the situation of going to a cafe for a coffee and ending up with the liver and onions or some other irresistible choice - it's those chalked up menus that tantalise.

I absolutely loved Hardeep Sing Kohli as presenter. This is no reflection on Fi Glover but the minute I switched on I was struck by his dry wit and of course his gorgeous accent. I would love to hear more of him on Radio 4
