David trained as a graphic designer and worked for three years for Reader’s Digest before joining Sotheby’s in 1965 as a book porter. He was later appointed a Director of the company and he retired in 1999. He is now a lecturer and writer and consultant to Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers in Stansted Mountfitchet in Essex.

David has written and edited numerous books and articles, including books on 19th century pottery and porcelain, and The Antiques Roadshow which gives readers a look behind the scenes at the Roadshow, as well as an insight into the lives of the specialists. He is also a Fellow of the .

His appearances on The Antiques Roadshow go back to the first programme in 1978. However, it was only in 2010 that David made one of his most important discoveries. In Saltaire, a gentleman brought in a large Chinese bronze vase which David dated to the Yuan Dynasty – at over 700 years old, it was without doubt the oldest bronze ever featured on the Antiques Roadshow.
